Left-handed Frederick tosses complete game

If Josh Frederick continues to pitch like this, he'll need to make room on his wall for all his masterpieces.

The junior left-hander tossed a four-hit, complete-game shutout and recorded 10 strikeouts in Eastern Wayne's 8-0 victory over Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Wilson Hunt on Tuesday evening.

Frederick faced the minimum number of batters in four of the seven innings and recorded at least one strikeout in each of the seven innings. Hunt had just five base runners the whole evening.

"Josh was around the strike zone pretty much all night long," said Eastern Wayne head coach Jabo Fulghum. "His off-speed stuff was right there and he located well. We changed up our pitch sequence tonight, but the big thing is Josh kept the ball down."

Cambric Moye's RBI single to left field scored John Wooten and gave Eastern Wayne a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

The host Warriors (13-2, 7-0 ECC) added three unearned, third-inning runs on three Hunt errors.

Moye tacked on a RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to stretch the lead to 5-0. Moye later scored on a Hunt error and two additional miscues led to two more Eastern Wayne runs. Hunt finished with six errors.

Moye finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI.

"They kicked it around and helped us out, but we put the ball in play and put the pressure on them," said Fulghum. "Hunt has a good club. That was very uncharacteristic of them on the defensive end tonight."

Eastern Wayne swept the regular-season series and moved within one victory of clinching its second consecutive ECC title. Hunt departed 10-3 in all games and 4-2 against league opposition.

"We're excited to get this one but we can't get complacent," said Fulghum. "We do have a little bit of breathing room, but we do have to come back out and get better tomorrow and Thursday. Our goal is to be the best club we can be at the end of the year.

"We're starting to be a better club."

Eastern Wayne entertains Beddingfield at 7 p.m. Thursday.
