Trojan women stage rally, but fall in singles

SUMTER, S.C. -- The tandem of Kristin Jones-Sophia Medeiros kept Mount Olive's tournament hopes alive with a comeback victory in doubles on Sunday morning.

But Erskine prevailed in five of six singles and claimed the 2009 Conference Carolinas women's tennis championship with a 6-3 decison over the Trojans.

Jones-Medeiros trailed 7-2 and stormed back for a 9-7 win over the Flying Fleet's Tessa Rheault-Mary Claire Rollins. Medeiros earned MOC's lone singles point at the No. 4 spot.

Carol Aro and Jessica Souza earned all-tournament recognition.

The top-seeded Trojans concluded the year 14-10 overall.

Men's, women's golf

CLEMMONS -- Pete Skirpstas completed opening-round play 11th overall and Mount Olive is 10th in the team standings at the 2009 Conference Carolinas men's golf championships.

Skirpstas recovered from a sluggish front-nine effort to finish 2-over par 74 after 18 holes at Tanglewood Park. Ryan Campbell (78) is tied for 30th, while Riley Boyette (79) is tied for 38th.

Scott Woodard (80) and Fabrizio Ceppi (81) are tied for 42nd and 47th, respectively.

The Trojans posted a four-player total of 311, three shots behind ninth-place Erskine and 10 strokes behind fifth-place Anderson. Belmont Abbey emerged the first-round leader with a 289.

Scott Woodard received first-team, all-Conference Carolinas honors and Skirpstas was named second team.

On the women's side, Kristen Moberg and Tegan Skirpstas enjoyed solid opening rounds. Moberg is tied for eighth overall with an 83, while Skirpstas shares 10th place after an 18-hole round of 84.

Valentina Urquiola, who was named the Conference Carolinas freshman of the year, is 24th overall. Deborah Woodrum (97) and Brooke Newell (102) are also competing for the Trojans.

Moberg picked up third-team all-conference honors.
