MOC's Wilkins breaks school record

MOUNT OLIVE -- Jovan Wilkins broke his own school record in the 100 meter dash as the Mount Olive men's track and field team competed in the Murray Neely Invitational Saturday in Greensboro. The meet was hosted by North Carolina A&T University.

Wilkins posted a time of 10.98, breaking his own record of 11.09 that he ran at the UNCP Braves Classic last month. Wilkins already had the fastest time in the conference. Elijah Corrica ran in his first event this year, posting a time of 11.70 in the 100, while Preston Grantham finished in 13.4 seconds.

Mason Holman ran the 800 meter run in 2:13.11 seconds, breaking his own personal best of 2:15.00, while Grantham finished in 2:20.02. Chris Menjares came within .10 seconds from beating his own record in the 1500 with 4:31.12, while Marc Holaday finished with 4:40.25. Cort McCombs finished the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.74.

Aaron Johnson broke his own school record in the long jump with a distance of 6.86 meters and finished in third place. Johnson jumped 6.54 meters at the UNCP Braves Classic. Corrica broke his personal best of 5.99 meters with 6.17, while Christopher Baggett jumped 5.18.

Joe Murphy threw 10.81 meters in the shot put to break the school record of 10.56, set by Alejandro Swinson at the UNCP Braves Classic. Swinson threw 10.62 meters, Christopher Dyer threw 9.39 and Justin Sherwood tossed 8.46. Swinson got revenge by breaking Murphy's school record in the hammer throw with 31.21 meters. Murphy finished with 26.48 meters, while Sherwood upped his personal best to 26.36 and Potter finished with 22.30. In the discus throw, Murphy recorded 30.75 meters, Swinson with 30.20, and Dyer with 27.5. Justin Potter broke his own personal best with 27.74 meters.

In the Javelin throw McCombs topped his personal best with 38.91meters, recording the second-best distance by a Trojan thrower this year. Joe Murphy holds the record with 41.16 meters. Murphy finished with 35.25 meters, Potter with 32.02 and Sherwood with 23.56.

Tahara Epps broke her own school record in the hammer throw as the Mount Olive women's track and field team competed in the Murray Neely Invitational Saturday in Greensboro.

Epps recorded a distance of 26.56 meters, taking down her record by almost three meters. Epps threw a 23.57 at the Aggie Relays last weekend.

Ariel Woodard-Stephens broke her own school record in the 100 meter dash twice, with times of 13.11 in the preliminaries and 13.04 in the finals. Woodard-Stephens ran the 100 in 13.29 at the Raleigh Relays last month. Ashley Knight also broke her own personal best of 13.67 seconds twice, with times of 13.64 and 13.49. Woodard-Stephens broke her personal best in the 200 meter dash with 27.68, while Knight finished at 28.97.

Megan Jones ran the 400 meter dash in 109.75 seconds while, Melissa Moore finished the 800 meter run in 2:39.48 to have the second-best recorded time in Trojan history. Caitlyn Pye finished in 2:55.78 seconds and Rocio Alvarado in 2:58.19. In the 1500 meter run, Moore finished in 5:33.09 seconds and Alvarado in 6:10.14.

Woodard-Stephens recorded 1.47 meters in the high jump and 5.06 in the long jump, while Knight recorded 4.47 in the long jump.

In the shot put, Shae Garner threw 9.61 meters and Epps threw 9.06. Garner came close to breaking her school record in the discus with 29.28 meters, while Epps threw 25.37. Garner recorded 30.43 meters at the UNCP Braves Classic last month.

Mount Olive returns to action Friday as the Trojans travel to Banner Elk to begin the Conference Carolinas Championship, hosted by Lees-McRae.
