KINSTON -- Greene Central opened the 2009 George Whitifled Invitational with a 6-0 victory over Croatan on Saturday afternoon.
Stephen McDonald led the Rams offensively with two hits and two RBI. David Stallings added two hits including a double. Will Bynum finished 2-for-3.
Jasper Jones pitched a complete game for Greene Central to earn the mound win. Jones struck out four batters and allowed only two hits.
Greene Central will be back in action tonight at 7 p.m. when they take on Charles B. Aycock.
Aycock rolls
KINSTON -- Charles B. Aycock bested East Carteret 11-1 in five innings in the opening round of the George Whitfield Invitational on Saturday night.
Jordan Quinn paced the Golden Falcons at the plate with a two-run home run. Jeff Carmel finished a perfect 2-for-2 on the night. Adron Hollowell, Connor Narron and Dylan Barfield each tallied one hit respectively.
Jimmy Kearney earned the win on the pitcher's mound. Kearney tossed four innings of two-hit ball and struck out four batters.
C.B. Aycock (12-4 overall) will battle Greene Central tonight.
Hawks downed
GREENVILLE -- Perennial power J.H. Rose was too much for North Lenoir to handle in the opening round of the Jimmie R. Grimsley Hot Stove Classic on Saturday night.
The Hawks fell by a 6-1 final.
Tyler Potter drove in North Lenoir's only run. Spencer Bass, Grayson Phillips and Najee Jackson each tallied one hit respectively in the loss.
Benji Harris took the defeat on the pitcher's mound.
North Lenoir (8-5 overall) will face Northern Durham in the second round of the classic today. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
