Wayne Country Day ousts Community Christian

The highly-anticipated showdown ended in lopsided fashion.

Eighth-grader Sara Best supplied two goals and added an assist as No. 1-ranked -- and unbeaten -- Wayne Country Day upended defending state 1-A champ Community Christian School 4-1 on Thursday afternoon.

CCS entered the contest ranked No. 2 statewide.

"We played a great game ... girls are firing on all cylinders," said second-year WCDS coach Baron Heinemann. "My offense moved the ball beautifully and my defense played extremely smart soccer."

The Cyclones (8-2-1 overall) rifled several long balls to their forwards, who had the better speed. The Chargers' back four, through communication and teamwork, stopped nearly every offensive opportunity by the visitors. CCS did not record a first-half shot on goal.

Wayne Country Day enjoyed a two-goal advantage at halftime.

Best broke the scoreless tie in the 16th minute off an assist from senior Brooke Norris. With two minutes left before intermission, Best scored again off Mack Thompson's assist.

"(We) exploited the wings and took advantage of every hole the CCS girls left through the middle," said Heinemann.

Norris extended the Chargers' lead to 3-0 in the 50th minute off an assist from Best. After a Cyclones goal, just the fourth allowed by WCDS this season, Thompson finished off the visitors with a goal off Kim Martell's assist.

"Once we gave up a goal, the girls turned it back on," said Heinemann, whose team has outscored the opposition 33-4 this season. "They finished the game pressing hard and rifling more shots."

The Chargers outshot the Cyclones 17-11.

Wayne Country Day returns to action Apr. 17 at home against the Epiphany School of New Bern.
