Sunshine, wind greet runners at Greater Goldsboro Road Race

Sunny skies and a cool breeze greeted 281 participants that turned out for the 31st annual Greater Goldsboro Road Race on Saturday.

After rain slightly impacted the turnout a year ago, race organizers welcomed the warm weather for the event sponsored by the Kiwanis.

"Today, weather wise was perfect," race organizer Farris Duncan said. "It was much better than it was last year. The turnout was the best we've had in 10 years or more. We had 200 to pre-register and 281 to show up for the race."

The road race serves as the Kiwanis largest fundraising effort of the year. While Duncan was unsure of the exact profit raised from Saturday's event, he estimated the Kiwanis raised between $6,000 and $6,500.

The day of running featured 10-kilometer, 5-kilometer and one-mile events.

who finished with a time 38:35. Josh Lewis of Goldsboro finished second for the second consecutive year and crossed the finish line in 39:34. Palencia Francisco of Wendell was third with a time of 40:05.

Katie Bedford of Goldsboro captured first place in the women's 10k after crossing the finish line in 51:20. Jennifer Kristensen, also of Goldsboro was second and completed the race in 51:52. Margaret Hill of Goldsboro finished third with a time of 53:17.
