Rain puts ECC game on hold

WILSON -- Heavy rains suspended the Charles B. Aycock-Beddingfield softball game after three innings on Thursday afternoon.

Athletics officials have not determined a make-up date since Wilson County and Wayne County schools do not share the same spring break vacation days. Beddingfield will not conduct classes April 6-10, while Aycock will out April 13-17.

"We tried everything we could to get the game in today," said second-year Golden Falcons head coach Brad Matthews. "I guess the bright spot is that we get to start with the lead when we do get to play."

Aycock (11-1 overall) sent 11 batters to the plate during a six-run, first-inning outburst. Brooke Bell belted a lead-off double that just missed clearing the fence. Cynthia Burroughs singled and Torie Benton.

Autumn Pittman drew a bases-loaded RBI walk and Anna Sullivan delivered a two-run single. Two batters later, Cara Frederick connected on an RBI sacrifice fly.

Ashley Shingleton and Bell capped the scoring with RBI efforts.

A light rain that had been falling throughout the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference contest intensified in the third inning. The heavy downpour rendered field conditions unplayable.

"There's just nothing you can do," said Matthews. "We thought there was a window to play the game and it just didn't turn out that way."

When play resumes, the Golden Falcons will bat in the top of the fourth inning.
