WILSON -- Brooke Norris tallied the game-winning goal in the second half as Wayne Country Day tripped up Halifax Academy 3-1 in The Brittany V girls' soccer invitational on Saturday.

The No.1-ranked Chargers remained unbeaten in four outings this season.

Halifax Academy broke the scoreless tie in the 17th minute and held its one-goal advantage through halftime.

"We had another slow start on the soggy surface," said WCDS head coach Baron Heinemann. "The girls were not accustomed to moving on such a surface and it cost us an early goal."

After some slight halftime adjustments, WCDS quickly collected the equalizer. Mack Thompson scored off Norris' assist and Norris put the Chargers ahead on an assist from Kim Martell. Norris received the sportsmanship award after the game.

Freshman Catherine Ford concluded the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 78th minute.

"The girls are hitting their stride," said Heinemann. "We still have weaknesses and we obviously need to pick up our intensity in the first half. We cannot continue to be only a second-half team."

WCDS keeper Ellen Elmore recorded six saves.

The Chargers (4-0-0 overall) entertain Ahoskie Ridgecroft on Tuesday and visit county foe Rosewood on Wednesday.

CBA shut out

WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock never got its offense together and fell to perennial independent schools power Covenant Day 3-0 in The Brittany V girls' soccer invitational on Saturday.

Golden Falcons goal keeper Courtney Sheeks received the sportsmanship award after the game.

Charles B. Aycock (4-4-1 overall) is the guest of county archrival Eastern Wayne today. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Little Big Horn.

Softball

Dawgs caged

PRINCETON -- West Johnston capitalized on a first-inning error and turned back county rival Princeton 1-0 on Friday evening.

Alexis Betancourt provided the game's lone RBI when the Bulldawgs misplayed a line-drive hit in the opening inning. Betancourt earned the pitching save with two innings of five-strikeout, scoreless relief.

Amber Wood took the mound loss for Princeton.

Hannah Wood paced the Bulldawgs' offense with two hits. Rebecca Harlan batted 1-for-3, while Tylan George doubled in three at-bats.

Princeton (3-4 overall) entertains North Duplin in the Carolina 1-A Conference opener for both teams Friday.
