PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning and held off Wilson Hunt 5-4 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference softball action on Tuesday afternoon.

Autumn Pittman led the Golden Falcons offensively with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate including a two-run home run. Cara Frederick and Torie Benton each add RBI and Brooke Bell provided a hit.

Pittman earned the win on the mound and Cynthia Burroughs worked 22/3 innings of scoreless relief for the save.

Aycock (8-1 overall, 3-0 ECC) visits future ECC opponent Triton today.

EW slips past WB

WILSON -- Lindsey Frederick's RBI double in the top of the sixth scored Casey Mitchell as Eastern Wayne escaped Wilson Beddingfield with a 2-1 victory on Tuesday.

Morgan Smith began the Warriors scoring with an RBI single in the first and Mitchell also provided a hit.

Lani Fricks earned the win on the mound allowing one unearned run on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks. The Eastern Wayne hurler left nine Bruins on base.

The Warriors (4-4 overall, 1-2 ECC) host North Lenoir at 5 p.m. today.

Cape Fear routs WCS

Perennial Carolina Christian 1-A Conference power Cape Fear Christian handed Wayne Christian a 16-0 loss in five innings on Tuesday.

Carly Hightower contributed the lone hit for the Eagles.

Wayne Christian (2-2 overall, 2-1 CCC) visits Northwood on Thursday.

Road unkind to ND

SPIVEY'S CORNER -- North Duplin suffered an 11-1, non-conference loss at Midway on Tuesday.

Ansley Hill contributed the lone hit for the Rebels.

North Duplin (2-5 overall) entertains Wallace-Rose Hill today.

Baseball

EW still perfect

WILSON -- Michael Fields tossed six shutout innings and got plenty of help from his offense in Eastern Wayne's 10-0 win at Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival Wilson Beddingfield on Tuesday.

John Wooten went 4-for-4 at the plate with a home run and an RBI for the Warriors. Jose Ponce contributed three hits. Cambric Moye, Robert Faucette and Josh Frederick each had RBI.

Fields scattered five hits, struck out six and walked one to earn the win on the mound.

Eastern Wayne (8-0 overall, 3-0 ECC) visits North Lenoir today.

WCS prevails

Wayne Christian defeated Carolina Christian 1-A Conference foe Cape Fear Christian 10-5 on Tuesday afternoon.

The loss was Cape Fear's first of the season.

Travis Thomas and Chandler Harrell each recorded three hits for the Eagles. Michael Johnson had two hits and Chase Darden and Matt Bogue each added hits.

Luke Howell earned the win on the mound.

Wayne Christian (4-1 overall, 4-0 CCC) visits Northwood on Thursday.

WCDS falls

Faith Christian of Rocky Mount pounded out 14 hits and defeated Wayne Country Day 16-1 on the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference scene Tuesday.

Cameron Ford went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI for the Chargers. Jack Scott, Cole Davis and Zach Syverson each contributed hits.

"It was not a good day at all," said Wayne Country Day head coach Michael Taylor. "We were not focused at practice on Monday and that carried into the game. We cannot play like this (eight errors) and look at strike three at the plate and win games. We will move on and play another day."

The Chargers (2-2 overall, 0-1 CPIC) face Greenfield at 4 p.m. today at Fleming Stadium in Wilson.

Soccer

Chargers rally

No. 1-ranked Wayne Country Day scored two goals in the final seven minutes of the match and rallied past No. 2-ranked Kerr Vance Academy 2-1 on Tuesday.

Kerr Vance led the majority of the match until Mack Thompson scored an unassisted goal in the 73rd minute on a breakaway to tie the score at 1-1.

With less than two minutes remaining, Brooke Norris scored the game-winning goal off a cross from Kim Martell.

"This was a nice comeback win for us," said Chargers head coach Baron Heinemann said. "I'm proud of the girls for continuing to play tough with only two subs after playing a full game on (Monday)."

Wayne Country Day (3-0 overall, 1-0 CPIC) faces Halifax Academy on Saturday morning in The Brittany at Wilson.

Eagles win shootout

Keeper Niki Fitzmorris stopped four consecutive penalty kicks as Wayne Christian turned back Cape Fear Christian 1-0 in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play Tuesday.

The teams battled through 100 minutes of scoreless action before dueling in the PK shootout. Katie Isenhower and Brooke Barfield each scored in the extra session for the Eagles, who improved to 3-1 against CCC opposition this season.

Wayne Christian (3-3 overall) entertains Northwood Temple on Thursday.

Falcons come up short

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock couldn't come up with the game-tying goal when it needed it most and suffered a 3-2 loss to defending Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference champion Wilson Hunt on Tuesday.

Samantha Parrish and Taylor DeMartini each scored for the Golden Falcons.

Aycock (4-3-1 overall, 1-2 ECC) visits Eastern Wayne at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Gators tumble

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Yajaria Hernandes tallied two goals as Midway upended Spring Creek 4-0 in non-conference action at "The Swamp."

The Raiders (2-5-0 overall) completed their regular-season sweep of the Gators and improved to 2-2 against Carolina 1-A opponents this spring.

Morgan Bell and Leanna West also scored for Midway. Taylor Lee provided two assists, while Madison Wolf contributed one assist.

Raiders coach Will Hurley said the team received strong play from Anna Johnson, Tori Reynolds, Angela Stern and Ashley Jernigan.

Spring Creek (1-2 overall) entertains Union next Monday.

Tennis

Rams cruise

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central knocked off Eastern Plains 2-A Conference foe North Lenoir 8-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

Eric Simmons, Colby Chase, Andrew Harrison, Jason Perry and Dillon Lee were all singles winners for the Rams.

The doubles teams of Simmons-Chase, Harrison-Perry and Thigpen-Lee were also victorious.

Jay Horne earned the lone singles point for the Hawks.

"North Lenoir gave us a tough match," said Greene Central head coach Brad Sauls. "They really challenged us in a couple of singles matches and we were lucky to win those."

CBA halts Saints

DUDLEY -- Charles B. Aycock picked up an 8-1 win over Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Southern Wayne on Tuesday.

Blake Vail, Addison Westbrook, Ben Nichols, Dylan Quinn, Rawad Alawar, and Kareem Alawar each earned singles wins for the Golden Falcons.

The doubles teams of Vail-Quinn, and Westbrook-Nichols were also victorious for Aycock.

The tandem of Chris King-Brandon Outlaw earned the Saints' lone point.

The Golden Falcons (5-1 overall, 4-0 ECC) entertain Wilson Fike today, while Southern Wayne (6-3) visits Clinton.

EW blanks Kinston

KINSTON -- Eastern Wayne rolled past Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opponent Kinston 9-0 on Tuesday.

Russell Turner, Eric Barnes, Mike Barnette, Marcos Machado, Joseph DiCesare and Will Kastner were each victorious in singles play for the Warriors.

The doubles teams of Turner-Machado, Barnes-Barnette and DiCesare-Kastner were also winners.

Eastern Wayne (7-1 overall, 4-1 ECC) plays host to New Bern today.

Golf

Eagles bag Gators

Wayne Christian outlasted Spring Creek 362-394 at Walnut Creek Country Club on Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagles Taylor Gardner had the low round of the day with an 85 followed by teammate Davis Taylor's 90. Jay Kornegay shot a 91 for Wayne Christian, Bradley Yelverton had a 96 and Bryson Tart finished with a 101. Blake Rousey led the Gators with a round of 86.

The Eagles (7-3 overall) entertain Flora McDonald on Thursday.

Walnut Creek LGA

Beverly Ives emerged the play-of-the-day winner at Walnut Creek Country Club.

Mary Ann Sutton captured low gross. Linda Cannon earned low net and Pete Reaves won low putts.

Track

GHS stumbles

GREENVILLE -- Goldsboro finished third with a team score of 29 points in a non-conference, tri-meet with host J.H. Rose and Bertie on Monday.

Rose won the meet with a score of 109 and Bertie was second with a 37.

The Cougars failed to earn a first-place finish in any event. Earning second place for Goldsboro were Jarren Reed (shot put), Carlos Atkinson (discus), Tyrell Jackson (high jump), Davon DeShields (1,600 run), Tyquan Sprangle (200-meter dash) and Bryan Johnson (3,200).

The Cougars' 1,600- and 3,200-meter relays also placed second.

EW, KHS split

SNOW HILL -- Eastern Wayne and Kinston each earned a tie for first place in a tri-meet with Greene Central on Tuesday.

The Warriors and Vikings both compiled team scores of 64, while Greene Central finished with 53 points.

First-place finishers for Eastern Wayne were Leanna Kirkland (1,600 run and 800 run), Ikeija Langley (discus) and Shannon Rouse (3,200 run).

Second-place finishers for the Warriors were Brittany Franklin (100-meter hurdles), Devandra Randle (triple jump), Tanesha Davis (discus), Tia Jones (high jump) and Kayla Jones (400 run).

JV sports

* Baseball: Greene Central 15, Spring Creek 1 -- Kyle McLawhorn, Will Crandle and Landon Elmore each collected two hits for the Rams. McLawhorn picked up the win on the mound. Greene Central (4-1 overall) entertains Spring Creek today.

Middle schools

* Baseball: Grantham 3, Mount Olive 2 -- Ashton Cox pitched a complete game and struck out nine batters as Grantham bested Mount Olive. Thomas Kelly belted two hits for the Bulldogs. Gerald Whitfield drove in the game-winning run. Grantham improved to 5-1 overall.

* Baseball: Norwayne 16, Eastern Wayne 0 -- M.J. Morgan, Justin Lee and Jeremy Lancaster each contributed a hit for the Warriors. Eastern Wayne visits Brogden on Monday.

* Softball: Princeton 18, Selma 2 -- Savanna Massengill paced the Bulldogs with four hits. Hanna Holland, Julia Coats, Katelyn Edwards and Jasmine Bombard each provided two hits. Logan Jones picked up the win on the mound with seven strikeouts.
