Goldsboro, North Duplin split doubleheader in baseball

CALYPSO -- Donald Lewis delivered two RBI and Marquis Dance notched nine strikeouts as Goldsboro upended North Duplin 3-0 in game two of a non-conference, baseball doubleheader Friday.

Dance permitted one hit and walked two in a four-inning stint. Devon DeShields fifth-inning catch helped silence a Rebels' rally and preserve the Cougars' first victory of the season.

North Duplin claimed the opener 17-4.

Brian Chase, James Kornegay and Konner Brock led the Rebels' offense with two hits apiece. Zack McCarty and Jamison Bell each recorded one hit.

The Rebels (3-4 overall) entertain Midway on Monday.

Chargers prevail

Cameron Ford doubled in a two-hit performance as Wayne Country Day turned back Hobgood Academy 5-2 on Friday afternoon.

Ford added an RBI for the Chargers, who improved to 2-1 overall this season. Jack Scott contributed two hits and two RBI. Hil Tanner batted 2-for-3 and swiped one base.

Ford worked five-plus innings to earn the pitching decision.

"This was a good win against a quality club," said Wayne Country Day head coach Michael Taylor. "I thought that Tanner and Ford really worked well together for being a freshman and a sophomore."

Wayne Country Day launches its Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference schedule at home Tuesday against Faith Christian-Rocky Mount. First pitch is 4 p.m.

Soccer

Falcons roll

KINSTON -- Charles B. Aycock scored three early goals and cruised past Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival Kinston 4-0 on Friday night.

Caroline Schlaeppi recorded a pair of goal for the Golden Falcons. Amanda Farmer finished with one goal and two assists. Samantha Parrish rounded out the scoring.

Goalie Courtney Sheeks recorded her fourth shutout of the season.

C.B. Aycock (4-2-1 overall, 1-1 ECC) visits defending league champion Wilson Hunt on Tuesday.

Softball

Saints win

DUDLEY -- Brittany Pate scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch as Southern Wayne outlasted perennial 2-A powerhouse North Lenoir 4-3 on Friday evening.

The Saints trailed 3-1 heading into the seventh, but loaded the bases. Darian Edwards drew a bases-loaded RBI walk to close the gap to 3-2. Kayla Gracyk was hit by a pitch to force home the game-tying run.

Lauren Darden earned the mound win with 15 strikeouts.

Kendal Letchworth led the Hawks' offense with two doubles. Kayla Letchworth finished 2-for-4 at the plate. Aaryn Deal tossed a complete game and struck out six, but suffered the loss in the pitcher's circle.

North Lenoir (3-4 overall) travels to Rosewood for a doubleheader on Monday. First pitch is 5 p.m.

Southern Wayne (5-1) entertains Kinston on Tuesday.

Aycock cruises

KINSTON -- Autumn Pittman held Kinston hitless for three innings and Rachel Jordan yielded a fourth-inning single as Charles B. Aycock hammered Kinston 15-0 on Friday afternoon.

Pittman logged two strikeouts and batted 1-for-4 with an RBI. Jordan collected a hit and an RBI.

Connor Davis cranked out three hits and two RBI in three official at-bats. Sarah Beth Marquis contributed three hits and a team-high three RBI. Anna Sullivan (RBI), Randi Tucker, Jessica Hare (RBI), Jacy Carden (RBI) and Cynthia Burroughs contributed one hit apiece.

C.B. Aycock (7-1 overall) improved to 2-0 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play. The Golden Falcons entertain Wilson Hunt on Tuesday. First pitch is 5 p.m.

Track

Cougars run well

TRENTON -- Tyquan Sprangle and Enrique Moses turned in regional-qualifying performances as Goldsboro dominated Jones Senior 76-43 in a non-conference track meet.

Sprangle recorded a distance of 6 feet, 1 inch in the high jump. Moses ran the 100-meter dash in 10.65 seconds.

The Cougars also received first-place performances from Jarran Reed (shot put), Carlos Atkinson (discus), Marquese King (triple jump), Mekieyell Wilson (400), Rashiem Hutchinson (300 hurdles) and Bryan Johnson in the 3,200 run.

Goldsboro's 400 relay of Moses, Wilson, Sprangle and Charles Smith captured first in 44.9 seconds.

Second-place scorers were Andre Montgomery (shot put), D'Rhajae White (discus), Smith (100), Davon DeShields (1,600) and Cortez Sprangle (400). Demetrio Irby took second in the long jump and high jump.

The Cougars finished second in the 3,200 relay.

Goldsboro runs again Monday at J.H. Rose.

Tennis

Warriors ace WCDS

Eastern Wayne's JV squad upended Wayne Country Day 6-3 on Friday afternoon.

Zach Phillips and Douglas Williams each earned a singles point for the Chargers. The duo of Michael Knutson-Jack Langston earned the lone doubles point for WCDS.

Wayne Country Day (1-2 overall) entertain county rival Wayne Christian on Monday. First serve is 4 p.m. on the Wayne Community College courts.

JV sports

* Baseball: Wayne Christian 9, Village Christian 2 -- Chandler Harrel pitched four innings of no-hit ball to eanr the mound win as Wayne Christian topped Village Christian on Friday. Gregory Johnson followed with three sterling innings of relief. Johnson led the Eagles at the plate with two hits. Harrell, Chase Darden, Ryan Cooke and Ian Shank all added one hit in the win. Wayne Christian improved to 2-0 overall.

* Baseball: C.B. Aycock 6, J.H. Rose 4 -- Golden Falcon hurlers Bryant Stafford and Collin Dubose combined for a three-hitter and 10 strikeouts in the non-conference win. Justin Barbour paced Aycock's offense with three hits and two RBI. Dubose (three RBI), Cameron Taylor and Jeff Davis supplied two hits apiece. The Golden Falcons (6-1 overall) travel to Wilson Hunt on Tuesday.

Middle schools

* Baseball: Eastern Wayne 12, Dillard 0 -- Brandon Presson pitched three shutout innings as Eastern Wayne upended Dillard. Tyler Warren closed out the contest with two solid innings of relief. The duo combined for seven strikeouts. Leonard Neal doubled and Malik Joyner singled for Dillard. Good defensive efforts were turned in by shortstop Torik Best, center fielder Maurice Coley, right fielder J'Juan Brown and pitcher Marlon Thomas (four strikeouts). Eastern Wayne (4-1 overall) travels to Norwayne on Monday.
