Despite holding a 24-2 shots on goal advantage, Eastern Wayne narrowly slipped past Southern Wayne 1-0 on Tuesday evening in New Hope.

It was the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opener for both teams.

Lily Herlihy scored for the Warriors in the 68th minute off an assist from Janielle Daniel following Danielle Daniel's corner kick.

Clair Parker had seven saves in goal for the Saints.

Eastern Wayne (1-1-1 overall, 1-0-0 ECC) plays host to North Lenoir at 7 p.m. today.

WCS falters

FAYETTEVILLE -- Wayne Christian couldn't get its offense going in a 2-0, non-conference loss at Fayetteville Christian on Tuesday.

Niki Fitzmorris recorded 15 saves in goal for the Eagles.

Wayne Christian (2-1-0 overall) travels to defending N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A state champion Community Christian in Wilson on Thursday.

Softball

Eagles shut out

Wayne Christian's softball team dropped an 18-0 decision in four innings at Fayetteville Christian on Tuesday.

The Eagles' Reagan Hinton spoiled N.C. State signee Sam Melton's perfect game with a single up the middle in the fourth inning.

Wayne Christian (1-1, 1-0 CCC) travels to Community Christian on Thursday.

Tennis

EW routs Bruins

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne routed Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Wilson Beddingfield 8-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

Russell Turner, Eric Barnes, Mike Barnette, Marcos Machado and Will Kastner were all singles winners for the Warriors. The doubles tandems of Turner-Machado, Barnes-Barnette and Joseph DiCesare-Kastner were also victorious.

Grant Nix won an exhibition match for Eastern Wayne.

The Warriors (6-0 overall, 3-0 ECC) visit Wilson Fike in non-conference play today.

Rams down Farmville

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central strolled to a 9-0 win over Eastern Plains 2-A Conference opponent Farmville Central on Tuesday.

Eric Simmons, Colby Chase, Andrew Harrison, Jason Perry, Hunter Thigpen and Dillon Lee each recorded singles wins for the Rams.

The doubles teams of Simmons-Harrison, Chase-Perry and Thigpen-Lee were also victorious.

"We looked pretty rusty today after not playing the last several days due to rain," said Greene Central head coach Brad Sauls. "Hopefully we can have a good practice tomorrow and get our rhythm back."

The Rams (5-0 overall, 1-0 EPC) travel to Tarboro on Thursday.

Hawks top Eagles

KINSTON -- North Lenoir defeated Rosewood 7-2 in non-conference play on Tuesday.

Matthew Binda recorded the lone singles win for the Eagles. Zach Behrend and Jamez Henriquez were victorious in doubles play for Rosewood.

The Eagles play Wayne Country Day at Wayne Community College on Thursday.

Parrott soars

KINSTON -- Parrott Academy was too much for Wayne Country Day in an 8-1 victory on Tuesday afternoon.

Zach Phillips picked up the only point of the day for the Chargers with a singles win.

Wayne Country Day (0-1 overall) faces Rosewood on Thursday at Wayne Community College.

WC tops GC

SNOW HILL -- Wayne Christian's varsity tennis team defeated Greene Central's JV squad 7-2 on Tuesday.

Taylor Gray, Christopher Easom, Woody Sasser, Daniel Glover, Kenneth Giordano and Matt Thompson all won singles matches for the Eagles.

Easom and Daniel Overby recorded Wayne Christian's lone doubles point.

Golf

Walnut Creek LGA

Charlotte Campbell was the play-of-the-day winner during weekly action on the Walnut Creek Country Club links.

Faye Franklin took low gross, while Evelyn Rose won low net. Linda Cannon seized low putts.

In a Eastern Ladies League meet at Kinston Country Club, Campbell captured first net in first-flight competition. Betty Holloway grabbed second net and Pete Reaves recorded the low putts in fourth-flight play.

Lane Tree GA

Susan Davis picked up game-of-the-week honors during weekly tournament action at Lane Tree Golf Club.

Betsy Clark and Betty Jean Gurley won low net and low putts, respectively.

JV sports

* Softball: Wayne Christian 17, Fayetteville Christian 0, three innings -- Rachel McCollum tossed a no-hitter for the Eagles. Blake Govan and Kayla Kennedy each recorded triples. McCollum added a pair of doubles, while Brittney O'Hara collected a double.

Middle schools

* Soccer: Eastern Wayne 3, Rosewood 2 -- Lindsey Underwood scored twice for the Warriors and Ann Reed Hulse contributed a goal. Logan Bill found the back of the net twice for the Eagles. Eastern Wayne (2-0 overall) visits Spring Creek today, while Rosewood travels to Grantham.
