Trojans' Woodard takes Barton tourney crown

WILSON -- Mount Olive College sophomore Scott Woodard emerged the lone under-par scorer at 2-under 142 and claimed the Barton College Intercollegiate men's golf tournament, which concluded Tuesday.

Woodard, a Princeton High School graduate, fired a 2-under par 70 on Monday at Wilson Country Club. He recorded even par during Tuesday's 18-hole round, placing him first among the 103 individual golfers.

The Trojans, ranked No. 35 nationally by Golfstat and the GCAA, finished runners-up to archrival Barton College in the team standings. The Dawgs fired a four-player, two-day total of 597 compared to 610 for Mount Olive.

Pete Skirpstas recovered from an opening-round 82 and finished tied for 31st overall at 155. Freshman Kyle Ham ended up tied for 34th and Riley Boyette wound up tied for 37th.

Due to injuries, just four Trojans competed in the 36-hole event.

Mount Olive returns to action March 29 in the J. Ralph Hargett Invitational, which is hosted by Wingate University.

Baseball

HIGH POINT -- Mount Olive right-hander Ryan Kussmaul, who threw a five-hit shutout against then No. 6-ranked Erskine (S.C.) University, has been selected the Conference Carolinas pitcher of the week.

Kussmaul, a senior, threw just 78 pitches in the complete-game victory last Saturday. The 195-pounder retired 12 of the final 13 batters he faced and allowed only one hit after the third inning.

Kussmaul improved to 3-1 on the mound this season.

Mount Olive earned a 2-1 split in the crucial conference series and remained one game behind in-state rival Pfeiffer University, which visits Scarborough Field for a three-game, weekend series beginning Saturday.

Until then, the Trojans (14-10 overall) entertain Francis Marion (S.C.) University today. The doubleheader has been pushed back to 3 p.m.

Women's basketball

MOUNT OLIVE -- Jasmine Whitby, who recorded the first-ever "30-20" game in Mount Olive College women's basketball history, has been chosen to the 2008-09 Daktronics Division II All-Southeast Region second team.

The award is voted on by sports information directors in the region.

Whitby finished the season among the Conference Carolinas leaders in scoring, rebounding and steals. Her "30-20" game occurred against Erskine when she tallied career bests in points (32) and rebounds (20).

The Louisburg College transfer was named the Conference Carolinas player of the week and earned honorable mention recognition for WBCA national player of the month in January.

Mount Olive finished the year 23-6 overall.
