PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock avenged a season-opening loss to North Lenoir with a 9-1 victory on Monday afternoon.

Eric Dubose stymied the Hawks for five innings en route to the pitching win. Adron Hollowell tossed two perfect innings of relief.

Connor Narron provided plenty of offensive firepower for the Golden Falcons. The hard-hitting junior belted a two-run home run in the first inning and followed with a three-run blast in the bottom of the third inning.

Nicholas McGee added three hits for the victors, while teammate Jordan Quinn recorded a 2-for-2 night in the batter's box.

Charles B. Aycock (3-1 overall) travels to Princeton on Wednesday.

SW tops Panthers

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne shut out East Duplin for the second time this season and claimed a 7-0 victory on the diamond at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex on Monday.

Ray Valazquez pitched 51/3 innings to earn the win on the mound. Michael Douglas closed the game out with 12/3 innings of sterling relief.

Keenan Winn blasted the first home run of his high school career to lead the Saints offensively. Scott Holloman finished 3-for-3 on the night with a double. Tyler Edwards recorded two hits, including a double.

Southern Wayne (2-2 overall) will travel to West Craven today.

Gators down Wildcats

NEWTON GROVE -- Spring Creek managed just three hits, but scratched out five runs in a 5-0 win over Hobbton on Monday afternoon.

Lucas Potter, Eric Evans and John Mozingo each recorded one hit in the win.

Freshman Duane Gurganus earned his first varstiy win by pitching three solid innings. Gurganus did not allow a run and struck out four batters.

Spring Creek (2-1 overall) plays host to South Lenoir today.

Softball

Aycock triumphs

LaGRANGE -- Charles B. Aycock got off to a hot start and never slowed down in a 10-0 win over North Lenoir on Monday afternoon.

Anna Sullivan led the Golden Falcons' attack with two hits and four RBI. Torie Benton also reached base twice and drove in two runs. Autumn Pittman recorded three RBI with a bases-clearing triple.

Ashley Doughety belted a double for the Hawks, who were held to just four hits on the night.

Brooke Bell pitched five shutout innings to earn the win in the pitchers' circle. Pittman closed the game out with two flawless innings in relief.

Charles B. Aycock (4-0 overall) will host D.H. Conley tonight. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.

Tennis

Saints win

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne kept its perfect non-conference tennis record intact with a 6-3 win over Rosewood on Monday afternoon.

Chris King, Coby Hood, Cameron Tammes and Brandon Outlaw each earned a singles point for the Saints. The tandems of King-Outlaw and Tammes-Satora each recorded a win in doubles play.

Rosewood was led in singles action by Cole Radcliff and Matt Benda. The team of Jonathon Rudolph-Antonio Henriquez picked up the Eagles' lone point in doubles.

Southern Wayne (3-0 overall) begins Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play today at archrival Eastern Wayne. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Warriors roll

KINSTON -- Eastern Wayne dominated North Lenoir en route to a 9-0 sweep for the second time this season on Monday afternoon at Bill Faye Park.

Russell Turner set the tone for the match with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ryan Kramer in singles and the Warriors never looked back. Aaron Dunmire, Eric Barnes, Mike Barnette, Marcos Machado and Mike Ames each earned a point in singles.

The duos of Turner-Dunmire, Barnes-Barnette and Machado-Ames each picked up a point in doubles action.

Eastern Wayne (3-0 overall) will host Southern Wayne today.

Golf

EPC opens play

Goldsboro got its golf season underway by hosting the season-opening Eastern Plains 2-A Conference match at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course on Monday.

Farmville Central captured the team event with a four-player total of 328. Tarboro claimed second place (350) and Greene Central finished third (366).

Farmville's Burt Davis earned medalist honors with a round of 78.

Goldsboro's youth-laden squad was represented by Jerami Chapman, Ricky Castillo and Obediah Speight. The Cougars travel to Princeton today.

JV sports

* Baseball: C.B. Aycock 11, Princeton 4 -- Collin Dubose only allowed one hit and struck out six batters as C.B. Aycock topped Princeton on Monday. Travis Musselman led the Golden Falcons at the plate with a perfect 3-for-3 night that included a home run, a triple and four runs batted in. Justin Barboul added two hits and one RBI. C.B. Aycock improved to 3-0.

Middle schools

* Softball: Eastern Wayne 16, Greenwood 1-- Eastern Wayne improved to 2-0 on the season with a convincing win over Greenwood on Monday. Ashley Cherry led the Warriors' offense with a triple. Stephanie Smith added a double and earned the win on the mound for Eastern Wayne. The Warriors will host Rosewood on Thursday.

* Softball: Grantham 17, Spring Creek 0 -- Taylor Parker hurled a no-hitter and struck out 11 batters as Grantham dropped archrival Spring Creek on Monday. Parker also added four hits in the win. Hope Rose finished 3-for-3 with a double for the Bulldogs (1-1 overall).
