DUDLEY -- Gabby Cornwall notched the hat trick (three goals) as Rosewood opened its women's soccer season with a 4-0 victory over county rival Southern Wayne on Wednesday.

Cornman scored twice in the opening half and added a second-half goal.

Cory Smith furnished one goal. Kaitlyn Conger and Kelsey Wolf dished out one assist apiece.

Taylor Johnson earned the shutout in goal.

Rosewood (1-0-0 overall) travels to Midway next Monday, while Southern Wayne (0-1-0) entertains James Kenan today at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex.

Aycock triumphs

PRINCETON -- Taylor DeMartini accounted for Charles B. Aycock's lone goal in a season-opening, 1-0 victory over Princeton at the Fred Bartholomew Athletic Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

DeMartini scored off Samantha Parrish's assist.

Keeper Courtney Sheeks logged the shutout in goal.

The Golden Falcons (1-0-0 overall) welcome North Lenoir on Friday. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Hardy Talton Stadium.

Softball

Golden Falcons win

PIKEVILLE -- Transfer Cynthia Burroughs pounded out three hits and scored three runs in Charles B. Aycock's season-opening, 10-6 victory over perennial power North Lenoir on Wednesday evening.

Burroughs, who helped guide Wayne Christian to back-to-back 1-A state titles on the independent schools scene, threw four-plus innings of scoreless relief on the rubber.

Torie Benton added one hit and scored four runs. Anna Sullivan (three RBI) doubled in three at-bats. Rachel Jordan contributed two hits, while Autumn Pittman (RBI) and Cara Frederick (RBI) each supplied a hit.

Pittman started in the pitcher's circle.

North Lenoir's Cayla Letchworth just missed hitting for the cycle in a 4-for-4 effort. She doubled, homered and drove in two runs for the Hawks. Teammates Courtney Hill, Jessica Kennedy and Kristen Davenport delivered two hits apiece.

C.B. Aycock (1-0 overall) plays host to Wilson Fike today.

Warriors win

Eastern Wayne rallied from an early deficit and topped visiting Greene Central 5-4 in nine innings on Wednesday night.

Caitlyn Turner belted the game-winning single that plated Casey Mitchell in the bottom of the ninth. Turner finished the game 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI.

Lani Fricks pitched a complete game to notch the win in the pitcher's circle. Fricks struck out eight batters and walked only two.

Eastern Wayne (1-0) travels to West Carteret today.

Saints escape

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne began its softball season with a wild 1-0 victory over North Johnston on Wednesday.

Brittany Pate delivered the Saints' only hit of the ballgame in the fourth inning and scored on back-to-back Panther errors.

Lauren Darden got the win in the pitcher's circle. Darden allowed two hits and struck out 13 batters.

Southern Wayne (1-0 overall) visits Greene Central today.

Baseball

Hawks prevail

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir kicked off its baseball season with a 3-2 victory over Charles B. Aycock on Wednesday.

Tyler Potter powered the Hawks' offense with two home runs and three RBI. Spencer Moye went 1-for-1 in the win.

Benji Morris pitched five solid innings for North Lenoir. Potter entered in relief and earned the win by tossing two perfect frames.

Connor Narron led the Golden Falcon offense with two hits and an RBI. Eric Dubose pitched five innings, struck out four and earned a no-decision on the mound.

North Lenoir (1-0 overall) travels to South Lenoir on Friday, while Charles B. Aycock (0-1) welcomes Wilson Fike today.

Saints open strong

BEULAVILLE -- Southern Wayne began its baseball season in impressive fashion with a 5-0 win over East Duplin on Wednesday.

Phil Howell earned the win on the mound for the Saints. Howell tossed six shutout innings, gave up just two hits and struck out seven. Ray Valazquez pitched one perfect inning in relief.

Jordan Hood paced the Saints at the plate with a perfect 4-for-4 effort. Tyler Edwards tallied two hits and scored two runs. Jordan Williams also belted two hits and drove in one run.

Southern Wayne (1-0 overall) will play host to D.H. Conley today.

Gators defeated

DEEP RUN -- Spring Creek came up just short in a 4-3, season-opening loss to South Lenoir on Wednesday.

Steven Best led the Gators with two hits, including a double and an RBI. Corey Howell also tallied an RBI in the loss.

Spring Creek (0-1 overall) entertains Midway on Friday.

Boys' tennis

Warriors ace Hawks

Eastern Wayne opened its 2009 tennis season with an easy victory over North Lenoir on Wednesday.

The Warriors swept singles play behind wins from Russell Turner, Aaron Dunmire, Eric Barnes, Mike Bennett, Marcos Mochado and Mike Ames.

The tandems of Turner-Dunmire, Barnes-Bennett and Mochado-Ames each earned a point in doubles action.

Eastern Wayne (1-0 overall) plays host to Wilson Fike today.
