Trojan spikers finish 2-1 during weekend tourney

BANNER ELK -- Mount Olive logged a 2-1 record during a two-day, three-match tour on the men's volleyball scene this weekend.

Noel Garcia recorded a double-double -- 13 kills, 10 digs -- during the Trojans' three-set sweep of Grand Canyon (Ariz.) in the Lees-McRae/King (Tenn.) College Classic. Pedro Penate added 11 kills and Jose Lanier supplied 10 kills in the 30-26, 30-26, 30-26 decision.

Middle blocker Mike Carroll posted eight blocks.

On Saturday, Mount Olive crossed the North Carolina-Tennessee border for a match at King College. Penate delivered a double-double -- 16 kills, 12 digs -- in the Trojans' come-from-behind 23-30, 30-23, 30-24, 30-27 triumph.

Garcia contributed 19 kills, while Lanier had 13 kills and four blocks. Carroll controlled the net with seven blocks and Penate blocked four King kill attempts. Libero Felix Reimundo emerged the defensive leader with 17 digs.

The Trojans' win streak ended with a three-set loss to in-state rival Lees-McRae.

Penate and Garcia pounded out 13 kills apiece, while Lanier knocked down 12 kills in 19 attempts. Setter Alex Hoekstra passed out 50 assists and finished the two-day Classic with 143 assists, including a 56-assist effort against Grand Canyon.

Mount Olive rallied from a five-point deficit in the third set against the Bobcats, but wasted two set points.

The Trojans (7-4 overall) return home Friday for a two-day, four-team tournament at Kornegay Arena. Joining MOC are Division III power Eastern Mennonite (Va.) University, York (Pa.) and LMC.

It will be the final home matches for three seniors -- Carroll, Penate and Mike Lewis.

First serve is 5 p.m.
