MOC's Easley garner recognition

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College junior Kendrick Easley has been named the Conference Carolinas men's basketball player of the year.

The 6-foot-1 guard averaged 30 points in three Trojan victories last week. He pumped in a career-high 39 points against Pfeiffer, 26 against Coker and 25 against Lees-McRae.

Easley is ranked among the nation's leaders in scoring, free throw percentage, 3-point field goal percentage and 3-point field goals per game.

Mount Olive (16-8 overall) entertains Erskine (S.C.) College at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Women's golf

NEWBERRY, S.C. -- Mount Olive College freshman Valentina Urquiola carded a second-day 77 and finished tied for 13th out of 72 golfers at the Newberry College Women's Golf Invitational, which concluded Tuesday.

Urquiola overcame an opening-round 89 and ended up with a 166 in the 36-hole event. Her second-round score was the third-lowest 18-hole mark of the tournament.

Kristin Moberg tied for 27th, while Deborah Woodrum shared 61st place. Tegan Skirpstas and Kristi Corbett wound up 65th and 69th, respectively.

The Trojans placed 14th in team competition with a 738.

Mount Olive returns to action March 3-4 at the St. Andrews Spring Invitational at Woodlake.

Tennis

AIKEN, S.C. -- The Mount Olive College men's and women's tennis teams dropped non-conference decisions against Peach Belt Conference member USC Aiken on Tuesday afternoon.

In a battle of nationally-ranked foes, USCA defeated the Trojan men 8-1 on the strength of five singles victories. The Trojan women endured a 5-4 loss after taking a 2-1 edge on the doubles courts.

Mount Olive's Diego Sender emerged the lone victor for the men, who fell to 1-3 overall this season. Sender turned back Aiken's Greg Andrade 6-4, 7-6.

Jessica Souza posted wins at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Trojan women. She paired with Carol Aro in doubles action.

Kristen Jones earned a singles point at No. 6. Teammates Camila Kurebayashi-Pietra Viana prevailed at No. 3 doubles.

Both Trojan teams return to action Thursday afternoon at Francis Marion.
