DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne made the most of its senior night and topped Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference foe Wilson Hunt by a 71-62 count on Wednesday.

Javaris McMillan led the Saints with a dazzling all-around game and finished one points shy of a triple-double. McMillan tallied nine points, 13 rebounds and 10 steals.

Desmond Raiford led the Saints' offense with 22 points. Teammate James Jones added 16 points in the win.

Wilson Hunt took the court just two days after junior varsity player Anthony Eatmon died while at practice.

"We send our deepest condolences to the family of that young man," said Saints head coach Russell Stephens. "They are in our thoughts and prayers."

Southern Wayne (17-6 overall, 7-2 ECC) concludes regular-season play today at county rival Charles B. Aycock. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.

Dawgs prevail

PRINCETON -- Princeton improved its playoff hopes with a 56-51 win over Carolina 1-A Conference rival Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday.

Brittany Baker sparked the Dawgs' offense with 21 points and five rebounds. Amber Wood added 12 points and three steals. Ashley Braswell finished with eight points.

Princeton (13-10 overall, 5-4 CC) finishes its regular-season schedule Friday at archrival Rosewood. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Saints stumble

DUDLEY -- Wilson Hunt recorded nine of the game's final 11 points in a two-minute stretch during its come-from-behind, 55-46 victory over Southern Wayne on Wednesday evening.

The Warriors trailed 47-46 before completing the game-ending run.

Lynnesha Leonard led the Saints' attack with 16 points, while teammate Octavia Lee contributed 13.

Southern Wayne (9-14 overall, 3-6 ECC) is the guest of C.B. Aycock today.

Swimming

Nolan wins pair

Wayne Country Day's Will Nolan touched the wall first in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events during a non-conference meet contested Wednesday evening in the Goldsboro Family Y pool.

Nolan captured the 50 free in 25.46 seconds and claimed the 100 in 58.99. He also swam legs on the 200 medley 200 free relay teams. The 200 free finished second overall behind Rocky Mount Academy.

Joining Nolan on the 200 medley squad were Walker Malphrus, Thomas Elmore and Thomas Yarboro. Ravi Chitilla replace Malphrus on the 200 free quartet. All four also participated in the 50 and 100 free swims, with Elmore taking second in the 100 free.

On the girls' side, Ellen Elmore emerged runner-up in the 200 free and 100 free events. Rebecca Thompson seized second in the 50 free, while teammate Anna Zbarcea ended up fifth. Char Yarboro was ninth.

Zbarcea and Thompson wound up second and third, respectively, in the 100-yard breaststroke.
