NCHSAA dual-team wrestling championships

CLASS 1-A

Topsail 44, East Wilkes 28

THOMASVILLE -- Topsail broke a 16-16 tie and tallied 28 unanswered points to defeat West Wilkes 44-28 on Saturday afternoon at Thomasville High School.

The Pirates earned their first-ever state title.

Topsail 171-pounder Stuart Nadeau was named the Most Valuable Performer of the championship. The Pirates advanced with a 42-36 victory over the host Bulldogs, while West Wilkes defeated Polk County 34-29 in the western regional final.

CLASS 2-A

Orange 33, Newton-Conover 27

HILLSBOROUGH -- Orange captured the rematch and repeated as the 2-A state champion with a 33-27 victory over Newton-Conover.

Orange (27-3) won its third dual-team crown since 2005.

The Red Devils (36-6) were making their third straight appearance in the championship match.

CLASS 3-A

Winston-Salem Parkland 46, Greensboro Dudley 18

GREENSBORO -- Unbeaten Winston-Salem Parkland earned its third straight championship with a 46-18 victory over Dudley on Saturday afternoon.

It was the Mustangs' fifth state title.

Parkland's Luis Ramos (145 pounds) received the Most Valuable Performer.

Dudley ended the season 20-6 overall, while Parkland fashioned a 38-0 worksheet.

CLASS 4-A

Cary 43, Matthews David Butler 18

CARY -- Cary claimed its third consecutive crown and eighth overall in the 20-year history of dual-team championship competition with a 43-18 victory over Butler High School on Saturday afternoon.

The Imps, who concluded the year 36-0, were making their ninth straight appearance in the finals and 14th overall during head coach Jerry Winterton's tenure.

Cary's Gabe Brotzman (152 pounds) and heavyweight Eloheim Palma shared the Most Valuable Performer awards.

Butler ended the season 21-4 overall.
