HAMPSTEAD -- Short-handed Rosewood suffered a 51-24 loss to perennial powerhouse Topsail in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A dual-team wrestling playoffs Tuesday evening.

The Eagles, who forfeited two weight classes, managed just four individual victories against the Pirates. Dillon Guss and Andrew Sass each recorded a pin at 140 and 152 pounds, respectively.

Greg Cavenaugh and senior Joshua Holmes each drew a forfeit.

"I don't know if it's the nervousness of the state dual-team playoffs or what, exactly, but we didn't wrestle our best dual-team match tonight," said Rosewood head coach Bill Edmundson. "These experiences are preparing us for next weekend's regional competition, and we saw three of the best teams that will be there.

"Our wrestlers have exceeded expectations all season and everyone in the community is proud of them."

Rosewood (18-8 overall) concludes its dual-team campaign at home Thursday against county rival Eastern Wayne. It will be the final home match for six seniors -- Holmes, Guss, Sass, Sammy Ennis, Ariel Nacca and Paul Atkinson.

Falcons stopped

GRAHAM -- Charles B. Aycock triumphed in six of 12 contested individual matches, but Nash Central squeezed out a 40-36 victory in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A wrestling dual-team playoffs Tuesday.

The Golden Falcons received victories from David Romo (103 pounds), Justin Farrell (119), Brandon Bailey (140), Brandon Thomas (189), Bryan Diorio (215) and heavyweight Elvin James Jr. Bailey claimed his team- and area-leading 43rd victory of the season.

Charles Pate drew a forfeit at 152 pounds.

Aycock concluded the year 22-8 overall.

Warriors ousted

WINTERVILLE -- Eastern Carolina Conference champions Zach Hahn and Zach Myers each emerged victorious in Eastern Wayne's 72-10 loss to perennial power Currituck County on Tuesday.

Hahn recorded a 14-3 major decision over the Knights' Rodney Howard at 135 pounds. Myers, a sophomore heavyweight, needed just 18 seconds to pin Justin Leonard.

The Warriors (8-19 overall) conclude regular-season play Thursday at county rival Rosewood.

Girls basketball

Falcons grounded

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock shot just 11 for 57 from the floor and Kinston was 6 for 6 from the free throw line in the final minute of its 40-32 victory Tuesday evening.

Troyshika Shaw led the Vikings with 14 points.

Camille Williams had eight for the Golden Falcons.

C.B. Aycock (4-17 overall) dropped to 1-6 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play and is the guest of Wilson Hunt on Friday.

Boys basketball

Chargers topped

No. 5-ranked Trinity Christian-Fayetteville erupted for 24 fourth-quarter points and turned back Wayne Country Day 71-45 on Tuesday evening.

The Chargers (16-10 overall) played without Tim Hobbs (injury) and junior Reco McCarter suffered a hand sprain during the game. McCarter finished with a team-high 13 points, while Rashid Williams collected 12.

Floronta Wynn supplied nine points.

"I was very proud of my guys for their effort tonight," said WCDS head coach Terry Jones. "They fought and hung in as I knew they would, but a coach knows and sees when his team has given everything they possibly could.

"I saw that in my boys tonight."

Wayne Country Day, ranked No. 6 statewide, plays host to Kerr-Vance Academy on Friday.

* Boys' basketball: Trinity-Fayetteville 61, Wayne Country Day 44 -- Josiah Davis paced the Chargers' offense with 12 points, while teammate Jordan Perry chipped in 10. Wayne Country Day (8-3 overall) entertains Wayne Christian on Monday.

* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro 60, North Pitt 48 -- Mike Sawyer led four Cougars in double figures with 12 points. Tyree Boseman and Octavius Alston tallied 11 points apiece, while Jarran Reed contributed 10. Xavier Knight knocked down nine points. The Cougars (12-3 overall) improved to 5-2 in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play.
