Some things never change.
For the second consecutive season, Charles B. Aycock's Carrigan Chastain and Eastern Wayne's Mason Chenier walked away with swimmer of the year honors in the season-ending Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference Championships on Saturday.
Chastain successfully defended her 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle titles, and swam legs on two gold medal-winning relay teams. The 200 medley of Ashley Potts, Bryce Connolly, Chastain and Taylor Allen touched the wall in 2 minutes, 9.21 seconds. The same foursome claimed the 200 free relay by a whopping 15 seconds over Hunt's 'B' squad.
Connolly, a freshman, emerged the ECC champion in the 200 free and 100 breaststroke. Allen claimed the 50 and 100 free events.
The Golden Falcons, despite having just eight competitors, lost by a scant 19 points to defending ECC team champion Wilson Hunt. The Warriors, who put 24 swimmers in the pool, seized just three gold medals but used their depth to collect valuable second- and third-place points.
Eastern Wayne wound up third with 49 points.
Heather Black paced the host Warriors with a bronze-medal effort in the 100 free and swam the anchor leg on the 400 free relay that took second behind Hunt. Joining Black were Carissa Turner, Meagan MacLeese and Joanne Talton.
On the boys' side, Eastern Wayne grabbed gold medals in 10 of 12 contested events and easily defended its ECC team championship.
The Warriors' Collin Hobbs emerged the first-ever ECC diving champion with a 295.5-point performance in 1-meter diving. His extra points helped Eastern Wayne roll past Hunt 127-70 in the final team standings.
Meanwhile, Chenier repeated as the 50 free and 100 butterfly champion. The senior swam the opening leg on the Warriors' 200 medley relay and the anchor leg on the 400 free relay -- which both won gold medals.
Alexander Robinson defended his titles in the 200 IM and 500 free, and also participated on the 200 medley and 400 free relays. Teammate Eric Gross won the 200 free ahead of C.B. Aycock freshman Brian Truman and fellow Warrior Shane Legg.
The quartet of Keith Gregorcyk, Marcus Corbett, Matt Moulas and Legg touched the wall first in the 200 free relay for Eastern Wayne. Moulas swam the top time in the 100 breaststroke.
Eastern Wayne's Sidney Myers was named coach of the year for the second straight season.
Southern Wayne's Phil Howell won the 100 free.
