Wayne Country Day began defense of its Class 1-A Coastal Plains Independent Conference regular-season championship in emotion-less fashion Tuesday evening.

The No. 1-ranked and once-beaten Chargers toiled through a turnover-marred 51-22 victory over Faith Christian of Rocky Mount.

"This was the sandwich game," said second-year WCDS head coach Eric Perry. "We had a hard game Friday (vs. United Faith) and they were already looking ahead to Tuesday at Kerr-Vance."

The CPIC archrivals meet Tuesday at Henderson.

Wayne Country Day (14-1 overall) converted 11 first-half field goals, but committed 11 turnovers during that same stretch against the out-matched Patriots. Faith Christian (3-10, 1-1 CPIC) collected five field goals in the first 16 minutes of action and nine for the game.

Senior center Bridgette Briggs posted a double-double by halftime and finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Chargers. Senior Brooke Norris, who played injured throughout the second half, provided 14 points and three steals.

Freshman point guard Catherine Ford supplied seven points, a game-high seven assists, nine rebounds and picked the Patriots for five steals. Kim Martell scored six points, while Shelle Anderson and Mack Thompson contributed four points apiece.

The Chargers recorded 13 steals as a team.

Conquerors triumph

It was a tale of two halves as Faith Christian came from behind to defeat Berean Baptist 40-36 in a N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A game Tuesday evening.

In the opening quarter, the Conquerors could not find their offensive rhythm, thanks to an incredibly slow pace maintained by the Bulldogs and an array of turnovers. Both teams struggled through a stagnant second period with Berean leading by two at halftime.

Faith came out firing in the third quarter.

The Conquerors ratcheted up the defensive intensity and forced the Bulldogs into 10 turnovers in the period. With the pace more to their liking, the Conquerors seized an eight-point lead.

Berean battled back in the final eight minutes and closed within two points with 13 seconds to play. Faith guard Alyssa Hill was fouled on an inbound play and calmly sank a pair of game-clinching foul shots.

Hill paced the Conquerors with 14 points and seven rebounds. Kaitlyn Floars added five points and five boards. Jennifer Christopher and Lindsey Godwin each chipped in five points.

Faith Christian (5-5 overall) plays host to Cornerstone Christian on Friday.
