SEVEN SPRINGS -- Winless no more.

Shaquita Brooks and Norma Valentin collected 10 points apiece as Spring Creek dumped Princeton 59-48 in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference girls' basketball opener Friday evening.

The Gators claimed their first victory in seven outings this season.

Melanique DeVeaux emerged the Gators' top scorer with 24 points. She added three rebounds, three steals and three assists.

Richelle Butler contributed nine points and five steals. Amy Parker scored eight points, while Machaila Jordan supplied two points, two assists and three steals.

Brittany Baker led the Dawgs with 14 points.

Spring Creek trailed 7-5 after one quarter, but erupted for 21 second-quarter points and never relinquished its lead. The Gators converted 17 of 33 free throws.

WCDS escapes

Senior Brooke Norris led a balanced offensive attack with 13 points as Wayne Country Day nipped United Faith Christian 49-47 in a non-conference battle of state-ranked teams Friday evening.

Bridgette Briggs added 11 points for the Chargers, who improved to 13-1 overall this season. Kim Martell scored eight points, followed by Catherine Ford with seven.

Mack Thompson chipped in six points.

The Chargers entered the game as the state's top-ranked team, while United Faith was ranked No. 2.

Wayne Country Day entertains Faith Christian-Rocky Mount in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference opener for both teams Tuesday. The Chargers are the reigning CPIC regular-season and tournament champions.

Saints wake up

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne used a 14-5 fourth-quarter run to turn back county rival Eastern Wayne 56-47 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opener for both teams Friday evening.

Tiarra McIntyre's layup created a 42-42 tie early in the final period.

The Saints reeled off eight consecutive points before the Warriors' Lindsey Frederick buried a 3-pointer, which trimmed the deficit to 51-47. Eastern Wayne could get no closer.

Clarice Sherard paced Southern Wayne (7-8, 1-0 ECC) with a game-high 17 points. Kayla Powell added 12 and Lynnesha Leonard scored nine.

Tia Jones paced the Warriors (4-8, 0-1) with 13 points, while Frederick contributed 10.

Rebels defeated

KENLY -- Jessica Jones was North Duplin's top scorer with eight points in a 56-18 loss to Carolina 1-A Conference rival North Johnston on Friday evening.

It was the league opener for both teams.

Tearra Ammons and April Jones added five and four points, respectively.

The Rebels remained winless in nine outings this season.

Bruins top CBA

PIKEVILLE -- Three-time defending Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference regular-season champion Wilson Beddingfield topped Charles B. Aycock 69-38 on Friday evening.

The Bruins, ranked No. 6 in the latest state poll, collected their 31st consecutive regular-season ECC victory and 36th overall in 37 tries since joining the league in 2005.

Shaniqua Clay paced Beddingfield with 17 points, while Ansia Dial contributed 12 points. Casey Elliott added 11 points, including nine from behind the 3-point arc.

Courtnei Gilbert and Courtney Sheeks led the Golden Falcons' offense with eight points apiece. Ivy Hartzell and Camille Wiliams each knocked down seven points.

Aycock fell to 3-12 overall.

Boys' basketball

Potter leads Gators

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Lucas Potter notched a double-double -- 10 points, 13 rebounds -- as Spring Creek defeated Princeton 47-43 in the Carolina 1-A Conference opener for both teams Friday evening.

Melvin DeVeaux added 10 points, nine rebounds and five steals for the Gators, who improved to 3-8 overall this season. Anthony Green provided 12 points, seven boards and six steals.

Courtland Jones chipped in seven points and seven rebounds.

David Gurganus paced the Bulldogs with 11 points. Benton Myers added six points and a team-high 13 rebounds.

Princeton led 22-20 at halftime, but Spring Creek enjoyed a 27-21 scoring advantage in the second half.

Cougars prevail

TARBORO -- Rasean Brewington drained two free throws with 10.1 seconds left in regulation, and Goldsboro edged Tarboro 57-56 in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference opener for both teams Friday evening.

Brewington finished with eight points for the Cougars, who improved to 10-5 overall.

Tyrelle Jackson led Goldsboro with a double-double -- 17 points, 13 rebounds. Demetrius Irby contributed 15 points.

Goldsboro is the guest of Greene Central on Jan. 16.

Chargers dealt loss

Wayne Country Day used a monstrous second-half run to challenge No. 3-ranked United Faith Christian, but couldn't keep the momentum in a 66-50, non-conference loss Friday evening.

Floronta Wynn paced the Chargers' offense with 21 points, while Reco McCarter knocked down 18. Tim Hobbs added nine points.

Wayne Country Day, ranked No. 6 among the state's 1-A independent schools, entertains Faith Christian-Rocky Mount on Tuesday. It will be the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference opener for both teams.

Rebels falter

KENLY -- North Duplin managed just three points in the first half en route to a 49-24 loss at Carolina 1-A Conference opponent North Johnston on Friday night.

Blake King paced the Rebels' attack with six points. Quintin Graham added five points and Shane Deaver delivered four points.

North Duplin (0-9 overall, 0-1) travels to Princeton on Jan. 16.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: Beddingfield 59, C.B. Aycock 57 -- Shepard Whitfield led the Golden Falcons with 23 points and seven rebounds. Artemius Taylor chipped in 16 points and seven boards. Aycock (6-7 overall) fell to 0-1 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play.

* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro 65, Tarboro 48 -- Michael Sawyer pumped in 17 points as the Cougars claimed their Eastern Plains 2-A Conference opener. Adan Hobbs added 15. Jarran Reed, Michael Sykes, Robert Kornegay and Shaquille Wright provided six points apiece. Goldsboro improved to 8-3 overall this season.

* Boys' basketball: Southern Wayne 51, Eastern Wayne 47 -- Trey Allen scored nine points for the Saints (12-1 overall) and Devondre Johnson contributed eight. Rashard Barnes led the Warriors with eight points. It was the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opener for both teams.

* Girls' basketball: C.B. Aycock 26, Wilson Beddingfield 22 -- Natana Martin led the Golden Falcons with eight points and Kelby Dumond and Elizabeth Fortner each scored six points. Aycock (7-2, 1-0 ECC) entertains Hunt next Friday.
