LOUISBURG -- Despite prevailing in just five of 11 contested individual matches, Charles B. Aycock pulled out a 48-30, non-conference decision over Princeton in the annual Louisburg Duals on Friday evening.
The Golden Falcons, still smarting from a stunning loss to Wilson Beddingfield just two days earlier, recorded five falls and received three forfeits.
Senior Brandon Bailey, who missed the Beddingfield match due to bronchitis, pinned the Dawgs' David Waddell in 44 seconds. Teammates Zeb Darden (130 pounds), Kaleb Robinson (160), Brandon Thomas (189) and heavyweight Elvin James Jr. each notched a pin.
C.B. Aycock's Justin Farrell (119), J.P. Combs (103) and Bryan Diorio (215) each collected a forfeit.
"(Princeton) did give us a battle," said C.B. Aycock head coach Mark Bass. "I didn't get a match for two of my better wrestlers (Farrell, Diorio). Princeton has good wrestlers in the lineup."
The Dawgs, meanwhile, picked up pins from Matt Evans (112), Drew Malarchick (125), Billy Creech (145) and Patrick Woodard (152). Teammates Mike Maus (140) and Tyler Baker (171) each posted a decision against their respective opponent.
The Golden Falcons (8-6 overall) conquered Wilson Fike, Bunn and Franklinton. But Aycock dropped its final match to Louisburg.
"We really wrestled so well up to that point," said Bass. "I think all my young guys were really spent. It was a good experience for them to get on the mat in a short period of time and that was a good taste for them.
"I think everybody will go into Christmas Break feeling we took a step in the right direction. We had a good day ... probably wrestled the best this team has wrestled all year."
Princeton (3-7 overall) endured defeats against Fike, Franklinton and Louisburg, romped past Bunn 47-21.
Both teams return to action Jan. 3 in the annual Terry Pilkington Memorial Duals at Pikeville. The day-long, dual-team invitational begins at 9 a.m. and admission is $5.
