NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Helen Moore and Laporsha Davis spearheaded a late first-half run and Mount Olive cruised past the Apprentice School 79-64 on Wednesday evening.
Moore scored eight of her team-high 18 points during a 14-3 run just before halftime. Davis added a couple of buckets as the Trojans (5-1 overall) broke away from a one-possession game in the final four minutes.
Mount Olive converted numerous Apprentice turnovers into 20 first-half points.
The Trojans scored on their first possession of the second half on Moore's offensive putback and the lead grew to 17 after a free throw by Prichard. Rashawn Lewter's basket with 18:46 remaining closed the gap to 43-30, but that was as close as the Builders would get.
Baskets by Brittany Miller, Whitby and Davis in a span of 59 seconds extended the lead to 49-30 with 16:46 remaining. Mount Olive took its biggest lead at 65-43 with 6:46 left to play.
Four Trojans scored in double figures as Prichard finished with 14 points, Whitby with 11 points and Davis with 10. Davis was 5-of-7 from the field. Moore and Whitby shared team-high honors with seven rebounds apiece. McGee and Brittney Robich each dished out five assists, while Prichard added three steals and a blocked shot.
Mount Olive returns to action Dec. 29 at Elizabeth City State. Tip-off is 4 p.m.
