Beddingfield stuns C.B. Aycock grapplers

PIKEVILLE -- Somehow Charles B. Aycock's work ethic in the practice room isn't materializing on the wrestling mat.

One month into the season, the Golden Falcons continue to struggle when they're put on their backs. Tuesday evening was no exception.

Wilson Beddingfield notched six pins and prevailed in seven of 12 contested matches during its shocking 46-36 victory over short-handed C.B. Aycock. The Bruins claimed their Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opener, while the Golden Falcons -- the reigning league champs -- dropped to a stunning 0-2 against league opposition this season.

"It boiled down to too many pins," said Aycock coach Mark Bass, who made notes in his scorebook. "You can be a good dual team and lose individual matches. You can't be a good dual team and lose individual matches by pins. That's what we're doing right now.

"Until they figure that out as individuals, as a team we're stuck where we're at right now."

C.B. Aycock (4-5 overall) hadn't endured back-to-back conference losses since moving to the 3-A level in 2001. And it's the first time in program history the Golden Falcons have lost to both Wilson schools -- Hunt and Beddingfield -- in the same season.

The Bruins (4-2, 1-0 ECC) received pins from Trevon Brooks (125 pounds), Hunter Baker (160), Victor Perez (171), Aaron Webb (189), Eric Smith (103) and Danny Nichols (112). Mark Knight scored a 16-4 major decision over Aycock 130-pounder Zeb Darden, who twice wiggled out of a first-period pin.

"We're scoring enough points to win duals, but we're not staying off our backs enough to win duals," said Bass. "That's it in a nutshell."

The Golden Falcons competed without two starters -- 119-pounder Jerome Butts and 130-pounder Brandon Bailey (bronchitis). Bass bumped up Justin Farrell to 119 and Beddingfield put a freshman, Adnan Allen, on the mat. Farrell earned a 38-second pin.

Fellow Aycock grapplers Thomas Podbesek (140), Aaron Pate (152), Bryan Diorio (215) and heavyweight Elvin James Jr. each recorded a pin. Statton Paris grabbed a forfeit at 145 pounds.

James Jr., the son of former Goldsboro High football coach Elvin James, escaped off his back in the first period. He stuck the Bruins' Chris Fess 35 seconds into the second period.

"He's really starting to get it," smiled Bass as he recalled James Jr.'s match. "I was proud of him."

The Golden Falcons return to action Friday in the six-team Louisburg Duals at Louisburg High School. Aycock will wrestle against Bunn, Wilson Fike, Princeton, Franklinton and the host school.

"We'll practice tomorrow and do it all over again Friday," said Bass. "We've got to show some better effort, which you can't coach."
