SEVEN SPRINGS -- Southern Wayne held off scrappy Spring Creek and earned a 54-41, non-conference win on the road on Tuesday evening.

The Gators trailed by three entering the final quarter but 11 fourth-quarter points from the Saints' Lynenesha Lenoard was too much to overcome.

Spring Creek (0-5 overall) pulled to within 45-40 with just over two minutes to play before Southern Wayne scored nine of the game's final 10 points. Leonard finished with 13 points and Clarice Sherard provided a team-high 15 points off the bench.

Melanquie Deveaux scored a game-high 16 points for Spring Creek and Shaquita Brooks had 12. A 6-for-36 performance from the free throw line plagued the Gators.

The Saints (3-7) host Jones Senior tonight. The Gators begin their Class 1-A Carolina Conference season at home Jan. 9, 2009 when they entertain Princeton.

CBA gets first win

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock earned its first victory of the season by knocking off Greene Central 46-40 on Tuesday evening.

Imari Howell led the Golden Falcons (1-10 overall) with 11 points and Camille Williams supplied 10.

Shonice Pettaway scored a game-high 13 points for the Rams.

C.B. Aycock visits North Johnston tonight.

Warriors top Hawks

Eastern Wayne scored a season-high 28 points in the opening quarter and rolled to a 58-32, non-conference victory over North Lenoir on Tuesday evening.

The Warriors' defense didn't allow a point until one minute into the second quarter.

Tiarra McIntyre and Danielle Daniel combined to sink six shots from behind the arc in the opening half as the Warriors built a 50-20 halftime advantage.

Neither team found any offensive rhythm in the second half. Eastern Wayne scored just four points in the third quarter and limited North Lenoir to six points in the final period.

The Warriors (3-4 overall) were paced by 15 points from Daniel. McIntyre added 13 points and five rebounds. Jasmine Middleton chipped in nine points.

North Lenoir (6-1) was led by Marisa Lanier's 15 points. Enjoli Mason added seven points. The Hawks played without starting point guard Jordan Hudson, who missed the game with a leg injury.

Eagles pin Gators

Zach Behrend exacted a little revenge and Dillon Guss avoided getting pinned during Rosewood's 60-24 rout of county and Carolina 1-A Conference foe Spring Creek on Tuesday evening.

Behrend bumped up to 112 pounds to face the Gators' Garrett Lewis, who entered the match unbeaten in six outings this season. Lewis nearly pinned Behrend, who eventually fought off his back and earned a third-period fall.

"It takes a really tough kid to wrestle a weight class up and fight off his back like that," said Rosewood coach Bill Edmundson.

Guss (140 pounds) got caught in a high-risk move and found himself in trouble in opening-period against the Gators' Ryan McCabe. But Guss collected his wits, didn't panic and turned the tables on McCabe with a second-period fall.

The Eagles (2-0 overall) prevailed in five of seven contested matches and earned four forfeits against the short-handed Gators. Jon Rudolph (189), Scott Pate (130) and Andrew Sass (152) each pinned their respective opponent.

Sebastian Jackson (171) and heavyweight Josh Rodriguez each earned a pin for Spring Creek. Teammates Daniel Richter (119) and David Smith (125) each drew a forfeit.

"Sebastian and Josh are both quality, experienced wrestlers," said Edmundson. "I was very happy with the performances turned in by Jamie Wooten (vs. Jackson) and Paul Atkinson (vs. Rodriguez) -- two first-year guys who are both steadily improving each week."

Rosewood returns to action Friday and Saturday in the 28-team "Brutal Class" dual tournament at Marion, Va.

Cougars top Firebirds

BAILEY -- Goldsboro placed four players in double figures and defeated Southern Nash 67-57 on Tuesday night.

James Williams scored a team-high 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Rasean Brewington contributed 15 points and Demetrio Irby had 12. Tyrelle Jackson chipped in 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Cougars (6-5 overall) visit Rocky Mount on Thursday. The Gryphons won at Goldsboro earlier this season.

Ryals leads CBA

PIKEVILLE -- Isaac Ryals poured in a season- and career-high 29 points as Charles B. Aycock knocked off Greene Central 75-56 at home in non-conference play on Tuesday night.

Jonathan Williams added 12 points for the Golden Falcons. Malcolm Dawson scored 20 points for the Rams and Will Bynum had 11.

C.B. Aycock (8-2 overall) travels to North Johnston tonight.

Rebels defeated

HOLLY RIDGE -- North Duplin trailed by 14 points at halftime and never recovered in a 73-47, non-conference loss at Dixon on Tuesday night.

Devin Oliver led the Rebels with 15 points and Quentin Graham supplied 11. Marcus Kornegay scored eight points and Xavier Lee had six.

Dequan Nixon finished with a game-high 17 points for Dixon.

North Duplin (0-5 overall) visits Lejune on Thursday.
