MURFREESBORO -- Freshman Derek Staton pumped in a collegiate-high 15 points, but injury-riddled Mount Olive College dropped a 93-58, non-conference decision to Chowan University on Wednesday evening.

Senior guard Justin Melton returned the lineup and played just nine minutes. Kendrick Easley saw 10 minutes of action in the opening half, but didn't return due to an injury. Mike Holloman sat out his second straight contest.

Craig Hayes reached double figures for the sixth consecutive game with 11 points and pulled down a game-high seven rebounds. Aaron Dobson finished with nine points, all from three-point range. Staton, who has started each of the Trojans' first six games at point guard, dished out a game-high six assists.

Layth Mansour and Aaron Scott combined for 43 points for Chowan. Mansour was 9-for-9 from the field as the Hawks shot an efficient 63.8 percent (30-for-47) from the floor as a team.

Chowan committed just five turnovers in the game.

Mount Olive (2-4 overall) grabbed an early 6-3 lead off Hawks miscues, but couldn't keep the momentum. Scott scored Chowan's first six points and Mansour's basket with 14:43 remaining in the first half put the Hawks ahead to stay.

Hayes' jumper pulled Mount Olive within 12-11, but Chowan (4-5) answered with a 9-2 run. Aaron Dobson hit a 3-pointer to pull the Trojans within five points, but Scott's four-point play with 6:47 remaining gave Chowan a 32-20 lead.

Justin Foskey hit a 3-pointer with 4:29 left in the half to close the gap to 36-27. Chowan kept a double-digit advantage the remainder of the game and grabbed as much as a 40-point lead in the second half.

The teams meet again Dec. 17 at Mount Olive College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
