MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive used a game-ending 8-0 run to upend St. Andrews 78-69 in the Conference Carolinas men's basketball opener for both teams Tuesday evening.

Justin Foskey's 15-foot jump and layup off Kendrick Easley's steal fueled the Trojans' last-minute rally. St. Andrews missed two field goal attempts and Derek Staton converted all four of his free throws to cap the Mount Olive's game-ending 8-0 run.

Easley finished with a game-high 25 points for the Trojans, who improved to 2-3 overall. The preseason All-America candidate added seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.

JUCO transfer Tanner Carnes pumped in a career-best 13 points and blocked two shots. Craig Hayes contributed 10 points, while Staton provided 10 points and four assists.

Mount Olive committed just eight turnovers in the win, while the Knights (1-3, 0-1) had seven miscues. Both teams hit 11 free throws apiece, but St. Andrews owned a 20-14 edge in attempts.

The Trojans return to action Dec. 10 at in-state foe Chowan University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Women

MOUNT OLIVE -- Jasmine Whitby pumped in a career-high 20 points and Alisa Jones added a double-double as Mount Olive throttled St. Andrews 88-47 in their Conference Carolinas women's basketball contest.

Whitby, who shot 7 of 8 from the floor, added seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. Jones tallied 11 points and 14 rebounds, but also blocked three shots. Tomeka Prichard and Helen Moore supplied 14 points apiece.

Mount Olive improved to 3-0 overall and it was career victory No. 96 for head coach Wendy Lee.

The Trojans built a 15-0 lead less than five minutes into the game as Tomeka Prichard and Brittany Miller combined for nine points. St. Andrews (0-3, 0-1) got on the scoreboard with a free throw on its next possession and Melissa Freeman converted a layup with 13:12 remaining for the Knights' first field goal of the game to make the score 19-4.

Whitby and Helen Moore combined for all the points in a 10-0 Trojan run and Shequanta McGee's three-point play with 8:08 remaining gave Mount Olive its biggest lead of the half at 37-7.

The Trojans rolled from there.

Mount Olive concludes its four-game homestand next Tuesday against Conference Carolinas foe Converse (S.C.) College. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
