Clingan among trio slated for induction

MOUNT OLIVE -- A recently-retired men's basketball coach, former Pickle Classic queen and former male athlete of the year comprise the 2008 class of the Mount Olive College Athletics Hall of Fame.

The trio -- Bill Clingan, Candace Tefertiller and Darwin Carr -- will be inducted during a ceremony Saturday at the Murphy Regional Center on the MOC campus. They will be recognized between games on the second day of the 43rd annual Pickle Classic.

"We're very excited about this year's class of inductees," said Mount Olive College director of athletics Jeff Eisen. "They have each played a significant part in the history of Mount Olive College athletics and are deserving of this honor."

Clingan spent 18 seasons as men's basketball coach and compiled an overall record 325-195. His last five teams made appearances in the NCAA Division II tournament, including the 2005 squad which won the East Regional and advanced to the Elite Eight.

A year ago, the Trojans swept the regular-season and tournament championships in Conference Carolinas play. Mount Olive either won or shared three regular-season titles during Clingan's tenure on the bench.

Clingan continues to teach at MOC and serves as executive director of the Trojan Club.

Crowned the Pickle Classic queen in 1995, Tefertiller became the first-ever Trojan student-athlete -- and just one of two in school history -- to earn an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship. She earned her master's degree in physical therapy from East Carolina University and will complete her doctorate degree in PT in April.

Tefertiller earned MOC female athlete-of-the-year honors in her junior and seniors. The 1996 graduate was also the 1994 Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NAIA ranks) volleyball player of the year. During her basketball career, Tefertiller averaged 15.6 points as a junior and was second in the CIAC in 3-point shooting as a senior.

The school joined the Division II ranks in 1995-96.

Carr , a 1988 graduate, received MOC male athlete-of-the-year accolades in his junior and senior seasons. He helped lead the Trojans to two 19-win seasons, which were a school record at the time. Since then, Mount Olive posted a 29-win campaign in 2004-05.

Currently an assistant principal in the New York area, Carr played on MOC's last junior college team and first four-year college team. He is one of the first athletes to earn a four-year degree.

Carr also spent 10 years as assistant director of athletics and head boys' varsity high school basketball coach at Berkshire Farms in Upstate New York, a non-profit residential facility for at-risk youth. Carr helped lead the team to three section titles and to one regional final.

In 2003, Carr and his team were featured on the ESPN television show "Outside The Lines."
