Bridgette Briggs scored 19 of her 25 points in the second half as Wayne Country Day dominated Cresset Christian 70-19 on Tuesday night.

The stingy Charger defense forced the Eagles into 38 turnovers.

"I was really pleased with how our girls stepped out and extended the defense in the second half," said second-year Wayne Country Day head coach Eric Perry. "They forced a lot of turnovers and set the tempo for the offense."

After a relatively slow start and some early foul trouble, the Chargers (3-0 overall) broke out in the third quarter. Briggs led the attack with 11 points and two blocked shots in the period.

Kim Martell finished the game with 15 points and five rebounds. Catherine Ford added eight points and four boards.

Cougars go down

Rocky Mount used a 12-3 run to open the second quarter to pull away from Goldsboro and picked up a 66-48, season-opening win on Tuesday evening.

The Gryphons led 13-12 after one quarter but used a 12-3 run to start the second quarter and extended their lead to 23-15. The margin grew to 36-25 at the half and was up to 50-35 after three quarters.

Abeyanna Whitley paced the Cougars with 18 points and the Gryphons' Dyonna Battle led all scorers with 23 points.

Gators snagged

SPIVEY'S CORNER -- Spring Creek failed to place a player in double figures and suffered a 46-24, non-conference loss at Midway on Tuesday evening.

The Gators turned the ball over 20 times. Melanquie DeVeaux led Spring Creek with seven points and Norma Valentin added four. Richelle Butler contributed three points and Elizabeth Edwards and Savannah Egleston each had two.

Midway's Haley Blue led all scorers with 13 points.

Saints fall short

DUDLEY -- Lynnesha Leonard scored a game-high 21 points but it wasn't enough as Southern Wayne fell 58-51 to New Hanover on Tuesday evening.

Octavia Lee chipped in 13 and Kayla Howell had 11.

The Saints visit Goldsboro on Thursday.

Rams stumble

WINTERVILLE -- Greene Central opened its season with a 58-27 loss at South Central on Tuesday evening.

T.T. Pettaway and Dominique Graham each scored seven points for the Rams.

Greene Central visits Kinston on Saturday.

SC cruises

SPIVEY'S CORNER -- Spring Creek outscored Midway 20-4 to open the ballgame and rolled to a 71-49, non-conference victory on Tuesday evening.

Melvin DeVeaux, Anthony Green, Courtland Jones and Lucas Potter each scored in double figures for the Gators.

Spring Creek (1-1 overall) entertains South Lenoir on Friday.

Eagles prevail

Wayne Christian bounced back from a season-opening loss to defeat visiting Terra Ceia 65-33 on Tuesday night.

The Eagles' Luke Howell led all scorers with 16 points and four rebounds. Kyle Harrell added 12, Colton Woods contributed 11 and Justin Brathwaite had eight.

Wayne Christian (1-1) visits Bethel Christian in Kinston on Friday.

PHS drops opener

PRINCETON -- Rocky Mount Prep sank key free throws in the closing moments to hold off charging Princeton and earned a 78-64 win on Tuesday.

David Gurganus led the Bulldogs with 19 points, 11 assists and five rebounds. Andre Nixon finished with 18 points and 12 boards and Patrick Jacobs had 11 points. Benton Myers and T.J. Wilson each scored six points.

Princeton (0-1 overall) travels to the Eastern N.C. School for the Deaf on Thursday.

* Boys' basketball: Spring Creek 48, Midway 46 -- Chavin Green paced the Gators with 13 points and five steals and Trey Parks provided 11 points, five steals and two rebounds. Cody Boozer pitched in eight points and four rebounds and Ethan Potter added six points and seven boards. Robert Shank had 13 rebounds.

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Christian 63, Terra Ceia 22 -- Chase King led the Eagles (1-1 overall) with 15 points and 11 rebounds and Chase Darden added 14 points and two boards. Chandler Harrell had eight points and seven rebounds and Gregory Alexander, Anthony Mulligan and Ryan Cooke all had six points.

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Country Day 65, Cresset Christian 45 -- Brandon McCarter posted a double-double -- 20 points, 15 rebounds. Josiah Davis contributed a double-double -- 14 points, 15 rebounds. Hil Tanner pumped in 11 points and handed out six assists. WCDS (2-0 overall) visits Rosewood next Tuesday.

* Girls' basketball: New Hanover 33, Southern Wayne 22 -- Courntey Austin scored a team-high six points for the Saints and Shanta Williams led New Hanover with 19.

* Girls' basketball: Terra Ceia 48, Wayne Christian 31 -- The Eagles Hanna Kaler scored nine points and pulled down five rebounds while Kayla Kennedy and Devan Isenhower each had six points. Isenhower also had seven rebounds. Carly Hightower chipped in six points and Kaitlyn Kosuda had four.
