Eagles too much for Greene Central

ELIZABETH CITY -- Greene Central concluded its season with a 42-26 loss to Northeastern in opening-round action of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 2-A (small-school) playoffs Friday evening.

The Rams' defense could not solve the Eagles' balanced offense.

"They came out in the I-formation and they were able to pass out of that," said Rams head coach Ken Grantham. "Once they started to have some success throwing, they turned and handed it to a big tailback and pounded the ball."

Even with defensive issues perplexing the unit, Greene Central kept pace throughout the first half. The Rams trailed just 14-12 at halftime, but the Eagles' big offensive line controlled the third quarter and converted an untimely turnover.

"They scored, and then we snapped the ball over our punter's head and gave them good field position," said Grantham. "It was all part of a bad third quarter and that's when things went south for us."

Quarterback Brandon Suit completed nine of 13 passes on the night. The sophomore threw for one score and ran for another.

"Brandon has done a great job of coming in due to an injury and taking the reigns," said Grantham. "Being my first year here and having a new offensive system, there was a lot to learn but our young guys stepped up and gave us all they had."

Greene Central ended the year 8-4 overall.
