Trojan volleyball, men's soccer dealt tough losses

LAURINBURG -- Alicia Mote tallied a double-double -- 12 kills and 14 digs -- in Mount Olive's four-set loss to Conference Carolinas in-state rival St. Andrews on Tuesday evening.

Racey Bartley posted 10 kills for the Trojans, who suffered back-to-back defeats in conference play for the first time this season. Senior libero Mallory Peavler, the school's all-time career digs leader, recorded 11 digs against the Knights.

Joanie Werling dished out 39 assists.

Mount Olive (15-16 overall, 11-7 CC) concludes regular-season play with a pair of home matches at Barton College. The Trojans face Lees-McRae at 6 p.m. Friday and Belmont Abbey at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Men's soccer

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Mount Olive's Anthony Payne scored the equalizer in the 55th minute, but Anderson (S.C.) University answered with two quick goals for a 3-2 win in opening-round play of the Conference Carolinas men's soccer tournament.

Payne and his teammates capitalized on an Anderson foul early in the second half. Kirk Peterson played the restart from inside the attacking third to Chris McClaugherty just above the top left of the box.

McClaugherty chipped the ball into the box to Payne, who headed it into goal for a 1-1 tie.

Less than four minutes later, Anderson (11-5-2 overall) iced the outcome on back-to-back goals from Lasse Sohrweide and James Mosely. The homestanding Trojans finished with a 20-7 advantage in shots and limited MOC to one shot in the final 30 minutes of play.

It was the final contest for Mount Olive seniors P.J. Pugliese and Matt Wallin. Both expressed pride in the team's accomplishments this season, including an unbeaten conference record in October and the program's first-ever victory over a nationally-ranked team.

"It's tough to end this way, but we had a good season," said Wallin. "We had some big wins this year."

Pugliese agreed.

"We had a young team and I'm really proud of these guys," said Pugliese. "Hopefully, this year will lead to even bigger things for the Trojan men's soccer program."

Mount Olive finished the year 9-7-3 overall.
