Rams keep playoff hopes alive

SNOW HILL -- Playoff football is now within reach for Greene Central.

The Rams (3-7 overall) forced three turnovers and earned an 18-7, Class 3-A Eastern Plains Conference win over Farmville Central on Friday evening.

A victory at EPC foe North Lenoir next Friday would punch Greene Central and first-year head coach Ken Grantham's ticket to the postseason.

"We've talked about it all throughout the year," said Grantham of advancing to the playoffs. "With the changes with the staff and the new offense that we've inexperienced our goal all along has been to get into the playoffs. Hopefully we'll finish out the regular season with a win.

"For the senior class, when we've struggled so many times this year and been up and down, to go out with a winning note would be a way to ease some frustration."

Kelsey Dixon's 54-yard interception return for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter sealed the win for the Rams. Dixon also recorded a sack and Danny Whitaker added an interception.

"We were holding onto a 12-point lead at that point," said Grantham. "Farmville Central threw a pass out into the flats, and Kelsey was there to pick it off and there was nobody between him and the goal line."

Farmville Central started six possessions at either midfield or in Greene Central territory, but was able to score just once with a touchdown late in the ballgame.

Greene Central's Marquis Graham's 24-yard score early in the second quarter broke a scoreless tie. Quarterback Brandon Suit connected with Dixon on a 45-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter.

The Rams mustered just 180 yards of total offense and committed three turnovers.
