Goldsboro overpowers North Lenoir

LaGRANGE -- On a Halloween night when millions of children hit the road in costume to play some tricks and grab some treats, Goldsboro had its own party.

The Cougars scored early -- and often -- in a 53-0 rout of Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference foe North Lenoir at Bullock Field.

"I thought we got off to a good start and set the tome early in the running game," said Goldsboro coach Eric Reid. "We wanted to set the tone and get back to our game plan by getting off to a fast start offensively."

Exactly three minutes into the first quarter, Freddie Jones broke a 12-yard scoring run and put the Cougars out in front to stay. After a North Lenoir fumble on its first offensive play, Jones found the end zone from 18 yards out.

"Freddie had a good night, but I thought all of our backs ran well," said Reid. "That's what makes them such a special group. They really fuel off of each other."

Goldsboro (7-2-1 overall, 3-1 EPC) opened the second quarter with a pair of touchdowns, the first on a 12-yard pass from Devante Waters to Enrique Moses. Ten seconds later the Cougars were celebrating in the end zone for the fourth time when Demetrio Irby scooped up a fumbled kickoff and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown.

The Cougars led 35-0 at halftime.

"We had a pretty rough time in the first half ... a couple turnovers that really hurt us," said North Lenoir head coach Wayne Jackson. "We got behind the chains on the two drives where we were moving the ball, and we weren't able to get anything on the board."

North Lenoir (3-7, 0-4) showed a lot of grit in the second half, but never found an answer for the vaunted Cougar rushing attack.

Jones led Goldsboro with 152 yards and three touchdowns. Andre Montgomery added 141 yards and two trips to the end zone.

Mike Sutton paced the Hawks'' offense with 110 yards rushing.

"I saw a young team that came out and battled all the way," said Jackson. "At one point in the second half we were playing nine sophomores and two juniors, and those kids refused to quit."

The defensive star of the night was undoubtedly Goldsboro's Enrique Moses. From his outside linebacker post, Moses recovered a fumble and grabbed an interception. He added a touchdown catch, had several lead blocks on offense and drew praise from Reid.

"(Enrique) played outstanding, and he did it on the defensive side of the ball which isn't usually his specialty," said Reid. "He is known for catching balls, but tonight we couldn't get it to him so he found another way to get involved."
