LAURINBURG -- Anthony Payne and Angelo Acquah tallied two goals apiece as Mount Olive College hammered in-state rival St. Andrews 5-1 in a Conference Carolinas men's soccer contest Thursday evening.
Payne handed out two assists for the Trojans, who clinched a berth in next week's season-ending conference tournament. Tyler Jameson collected an unassisted goal in the 19th minute and passed out an assists for Mount Olive, which climbed to 9-5-3 overall and 3-3-3 against conference opposition this season.
Payne took over the team scoring lead with six goals and eight assists (20 points). Payne and Acquah are tied with Scott Mitchell for the team lead in goals.
The five goals were the most for Mount Olive since a 6-0 win over archrival Barton on Oct. 1. Since that victory, the Trojans compiled a 1-2-3 record in their next five outings and scored just one goal.
"We've been creating opportunities all season," said Payne, a freshman from Manassas, Va. "The difference today is we were able to finish."
Trojans keeper Chris Slaughter recorded five saves, but lost his shutout bid when the Knights' Justin Gartin scored in the 82nd minute. Gartin ended his collegiate career as St. Andrews' all-time career goal-scoring and point-scoring leader.
Mount Olive concludes regular-season play at home Saturday against Queens University-Charlotte. Game time is 4 p.m. at Amon Field.
