LAURINBURG -- Carrie Jones punched in an unassisted goal with 32 seconds left in the opening half and St. Andrews held on to defeat Mount Olive 1-0 in Conference Carolinas women's soccer action Wednesday evening.
Cara Paxson's potential game-tying shot in the 87th minute deflected off the post and the Trojans missed a chance to qualify for next week's conference tournament. Mount Olive (6-12 overall, 4-6 CC) needs a win or tie in its final two matches to clinch a tournament berth. Either a loss or tie by Anderson or Lees-McRae will prove beneficial, also.
Facing a scoreless tie at halftime, St. Andrews mustered its game-winning attack before the clock tripped to triple zeroes. Kerrie Brown took a 20-yard shot that McIntyre appeared to save, but the ball bounced off her hands and chest.
Jones collected the rebound near the right post and scored.
The goal marked the first time in seven matches the Trojans trailed during regulation. Three of the Trojans' four first-half shots were on goal as Burton made saves against Lyndsay Brennan, Alyecia Higgins and Marie Richter. Richters also had an 18-yard attempt go just over the crossbar.
The loss was Mount Olive's first against St. Andrews since 2003, ending a streak of four consecutive wins over the Knights.
The Trojans conclude regular-season play at home Saturday against league-leading Queens University of Charlotte. It will be the final home match for seniors Brennan and Jackie Jimenez, and junior Amanda Huber, who will next year student teaching.
Kickoff is 1 p.m. at Amon Field.
