Gators' Howell finishes 12th in Mideast cross country regional

BURGAW -- Corey Howell took 12th place overall and Spring Creek claimed fourth place in team competition during the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A men's mideast regional cross country meet Saturday morning.

Howell ran the 3.1-mile course at Pender High School in 19 minutes, 25 seconds. Teammates Drew Pierce (20:13) and John Kearney (20:28) captured 22nd and 24th, respectively.

Andrew Swedenburg crossed the line 27th in 20:49 and Kenneth Freeman concluded the Gators' 110-point effort with a 30th-place effort of 21:08. Teammates Sebastian Jackson (46th) and Starling Krentz (48th) also participated.

Spring Creek qualified for the NCHSAA Championships scheduled next Saturday at Tanglewood Park in Winston-Salem.

"I've got a great group of guys who are a lot of fun to be around," said Gators coach Carl Whittington. "They've all got great attitudes and they work hard."

Eagles run in NCISAA

CARY -- Wayne Christian's Justin Brathwaite posted a personal-best time during the season-ending, N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Classes 1-A/2-A men's cross country championships on Friday afternoon.

Brathwaite ran the 5K (3.1 miles) WakeMED course in 18 minutes, 12 seconds to finish 27th overall. Teammate Josh Magnus, the 2008 Wayne County champion, crossed the line in 28th at 18:15.

Connor Jones ended up 56th in 19 minutes. Fellow Eagles Mark Sawyer and Noah Kearney took 80th and 85th, respectively. Kearney ran a personal-best 19:51. Anthony Mulligan and Will Massey also participated.

Wayne Christian claimed ninth place overall in the team competition, but emerged No. 1 among competing 1-A schools.

On the girls' side, Jennifer Price grabbed 33rd overall with a personal-best and school-record run of 21:50. Teammates Kayla Kennedy (26:24), Tiffany Price (30:13), Katherine Laramee (30:19) and Katie Saltzmann (36:43) also contributed to the Eagles' team score.

Wayne Christian placed 21st overall, including sixth among 1-A schools.
