BURGAW -- Waccamaw Conference champion Pender handed Princeton a season-endiing 25-15, 25-19, 25-20 defeat in third-round play of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A volleyball playoffs on Thursday evening.

Erin Schultz handed out 12 assists to go along with three digs, one service ace and a kill. Amber Wood provided eight digs, while Danielle Mitchell added five digs, two kills and an assist.

Devon Murphy contributed six kills, five digs, a block and an ace. Ashley Braswell chipped in five kills, an ace and a dig. Brittany Baker had two kills and a block.

Hannah Wood finished with three digs. Nikki Capps recorded an ace, a dig and a block. Annamikel Bridgers added an ace.

"I am proud of how well the team played," said Bulldogs head coach Trudi Rast. "The team has improved so much over the season and has played some of their best ball during these playoff games. I have seen them grow and mature on the court, and I am sad to see the season come to an end.

"(I) wish the seniors the best of luck in the future. We will truly miss them and the hard work they have shown over the years."

Princeton finished the season with a 14-7 record.

JV sports

* Football: Wilson Beddingfield 6, Eastern Wayne 0 -- Ryan Jones led the Warriors' rushing attack with 60 yards. Eastern Wayne (2-5 overall, 1-2 ECC) travels to Charles B. Aycock next Thursday.

* Football: Goldsboro 52, Farmville Central 18 -- Demarcus Williamson paced the Cougars' offense with 191 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Quarterback Cortez Sprangle was 7 for 10 through the air for 170 yards and two touchdown passes to Mike Sawyer. Sawyer ended the evening with 112 yards receiving, two rushing touchdowns and also picked off a pass on defense. Octavius Thompson also had a 43-yard rushing touchdown for Goldsboro (5-2 overall, 2-1 EPC). Willie Sutton led the defense with 12 tackles and Cameron Robinson and Thompson added nine and eight tackles respectively. Davon Deshields contributed an interception.

* Football: C.B. Aycock 12, Wilson Hunt 8 -- Antonio Applewhite finished with 120 yards on 18 carries for the Golden Falcons. Marquis Bryant rushed for 65 yards and a touchdown and led the defense with seven tackles.

* Football: Kinston 26, Southern Wayne 20 -- Jaquan Cobb scored on touchdown runs of eight and three yards for the Saints, and finished with 118 yards on the ground. Quintin Smith tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Tobius Flow. Delfawn Worrells picked off a pass and Robert Lennox led the defense with nine tackles and a sack. Dylan Jacobs added six tackles and Devante Artis also had a sack. Southern Wayne (4-4 overall) plays host to Wilson Hunt next Thursday.

Middle schools

* Football: Grantham 28, Brogden 6 -- Tori Carmichael had touchdown runs of 42 and 3 yards for the Bulldogs and Tyler Kornegay hauled in a 30-yard touchdown pass. Raymond Barnes recovered a fumble in the end zone for a score and Thomas Kelly had an interception. Grantham (5-1 overall, 3-0 WCMSAC Division II) entertains Mount Olive next Thursday. Brogden (5-2, 3-1 WCMSAC) concluded its season.

* Football: Greenwood 32, Norwayne 22 -- Jalan Spruiel, Halice Floyd and Quavis Holloman each scored touchdowns for Greenwood. Greenwood (5-1, 2-0 WCMSAC Division I) travels to Dillard next Thursday with conference title on the line.

* Football: Dillard 16, Eastern Wayne 0 -- Karon Alston scored on touchdown runs of 40 and 20 yards and also added a two-point conversion. Maurice Coley scored a two-point conversion and led the defense with seven tackles. Adrian Souper and Malik Joyner both recorded interceptions. Dillard (5-0 overall) entertains Greenwood next Thursday.

* Volleyball: Norwayne d. Greenwood 25-19, 25-12, 25-20 -- Regan Herndon led the Cobras with nine points on serve. Ciarra Harris added seven points. Norwayne (12-0 overall) will host Mount Olive on Monday.

* Volleyball: Spring Creek d. Dillard 29-27, 9-25, 10-25, 25-15, 15-11 -- Amanda Casey led the Gators from the service line with four aces. Dorothy Brooks and Karen Best each contributed 12 points on serve. Spring Creek (8-5 overall) will travel to Rosewood on Oct. 30.

* Soccer: Norwayne 9, Greenwood 1 -- Juan Pina tallied two goals for the Cobras. Damon Pate, Addison Vail, Hunter Cox, Cody Ruhl, Logan Brown and Paul Kim also scored for Norwayne. David Craig accounted for the T-Birds' lone goal.

* Volleyball: Grantham d. Brogden 25-17, 18-25, 25-14, 25-19 -- Keaton Bradley served six aces for the Bulldogs, while Kala Overton added three aces. Amber Murphy provided three kills. Morgan Powell and Trissa Sanders contributed two kills and one kill, respectively. Grantham (4-11 overall, 3-6 WCMSAC Division II) entertains Rosewood on Monday.

* Volleyball: Rosewood d. Mount Olive 25-9, 25-14, 21-25, 27-25 -- Holly Heath served 11 aces for the Eagles (9-3, 6-0 WCMSAC Division II) and Amanda Beckhert added seven aces.
