WILSON -- Mac Stover scampered into the end zone from 59 yards out less than two minutes in and Eastern Wayne played stingy defense in a 15-6 Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference win at Wilson Hunt on Friday evening.
Stover finished with 123 yards on 24 carries.
After Hunt got on the board with a field goal midway through the second quarter, Eastern Wayne (5-3, 2-0 ECC) quarterback Dan Price tossed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Will White.
"We moved the ball OK at times," said Eastern Wayne head coach Jeff Price. "(Mac) ran the ball well for us and it was enough to get the job done. You would always like to have more offense, but we're happy for our team.
"They got a second conference win."
Hunt, the preseason favorite to win the Eastern Carolina Conference title, tacked on a field goal late in the third quarter and Eastern Wayne finished its scoring by forcing a safety early in the fourth.
"It was one of those messy kind of nights," said Price. "Everybody was kind of depending on their defense. Our defense played well. I can't say enough about them. Hunt has a great tradition regardless of what their record might suggest. We knew it was going to be a tough game."
After battling through injuries, the suspension of running back Hassan Best and the loss of back-to-back non-conference games, Eastern Wayne has responded by winning its first two ECC contests.
"I think our team attitude is a little better," said Price. "We've gone through a lot of adversity and we realize each week is a different challenge and a bigger challenge. Our guys have responded to a lot of different things and we still have some more challenges before the season is complete and maybe we can find a way to overcome those things.
"It's been kind of a crazy season and you don't ever know what you will face on Friday nights."
Eastern Wayne will travel to Wilson Beddingfield (8-0, 2-0) next Friday.
