SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek rallied to claim two critical doubles points and defeat Manteo 6-3 in their Class 1-A N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team, women's tennis playoff match Tuesday afternoon.

The No. 10-ranked Gators trailed 4-3 at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles, and each tandem nearly posted the same final result.

The top-seeded duo of Jamie Johnson-Rachel Lewis won the final five games in an 8-4 decision over the Redskins' Amanda Daniels-Page Parks. The No. 3 twosome of Jana Kutsch-Lauren Player turned back Schae Grimball-Renae Hester 8-5.

"It wasn't easy ... doubles especially," said Spring Creek head coach Robert Jones. "We played well, especially in spots. We did what we had to do to win. To make it back to the final eight in the state is a great accomplishment for this team."

Johnson improved to 14-0 in singles play with a straight-set win. Teammates Lewis, Kutsch and Player also took a straight-set victory. Kutsch remained unbeaten in 13 outings this season.

Spring Creek (12-1 overall) travels to No. 7-ranked Raleigh Charter (16-3) next Tuesday.

Rams advance

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central breezed past visiting Clinton 6-0 in the first round of the Class 2-A N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs on Tuesday.

Elizabeth McLawhorn, Lauren Carraway, Samantha Taylor, Jessica Gray, Abby Sugg and Abbey Dail were each victorious in singles play for the Rams.

"We played a very solid match today against a scrappy, determined Clinton team," said Greene Central head coach Donald Clark "Clinton made us hit a lot of balls today. I was very impressed with the competitive spirit of their team. This was probably the best we've played in singles since late September."

Greene Central (17-3 overall) is hosting the Mideastern 2-A Regional women's tennis tournament Friday and Saturday.

The Rams entertain Eastern Plains rival and state-ranked Tarboro in a second-round, dual-team playoff match Oct. 21.

CBA blanks Bertie

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock advanced to the second-round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A dual-team playoffs by defeating Bertie 8-0 on Tuesday.

Ashley Howell, Kristen Fischer, Hollie Baker, Abbey Strickland, Nicole Kessler, and Harlie Howard were all singles winners for the Golden Falcons.

The doubles teams of Fischer/Baker and Howell/Strickland were also victorious.

Aycock (10-6 overall) continues dual-team playoff action at 4 p.m. next Tuesday at Jacksonville White Oak.

Volleyball

Eagles cruise

Wayne Christian began Carolina Christian 1-A Conference tournament play by defeating Trinity of Raleigh 25-18, 25-21, 25-21 on Tuesday.

Sophomore middle hitter Summer Brathwaite recorded a season-high eight kills and Kaitlyn Kosuda chipped in six kills. Katie Daniels finished with 10 kills and Allison Rose provided five digs. Hanna Kaler added 21 assists and three blocks.

Crissi Brogneaux ended the evening with four aces.

The Eagles (14-6 overall) continue tournament play Thursday at Trinity of Durham. First serve is 6:30 p.m.

Rosewood triumphs

KENLY -- Rosewood knocked off archrival Princeton 25-21, 27-25, 25-22 during semifinal-round play in the Carolina 1-A Conference tournament Tuesday.

Taylor Johnson recorded 15 kills, nine digs, two service aces and four blocks. Paige Babb handed out 20 assists to go along with one ace and six digs. Jennifer Hall added 10 digs and two kills.

Caroline Tart contributed three kills and two digs.

Rosewood (9-10 overall) faces North Johnston in the tournament final today. Game time is 5:30 p.m.

Hawks reach finals

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir advanced to the finals of the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference tournament with a 25-17, 25-11, 25-12 victory over Greene Central on Tuesday.

Marissa Lanier led the way with 11 kills and Jordan Hudson added 24 assists. Asheena Moore contributed three kills and two blocks and Courtney Hill had six kills.

The Hawks (22-0 overall) play host to Farmville Central in the tournament finals at 6 p.m. today.

FCS prevails

Faith Christian concluded regular-season play with a 25-18, 24-26, 25-23, 25-20 triumph over visiting Trinity of Greenville on Tuesday.

Brooke Anderson recorded six kills and three digs for the Conquerors. Kaitlyn Floars finished with eight kills, two blocks and a dig. Jennifer Christopher added six assists, once ace and a dig and Rebecca Smith provided eight assists, two kills and a dig. Alyssa Hill had four kills, three assists and two digs and Brittany Dail chipped in three digs. Madison Caudle had four blocks, three kills, two aces and an assist.

Faith (9-4) will host Falls Road in the N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal Region 2-A Conference tournament on Thursday.

Bruins outlast CBA

WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock was right there for four games, but had little to show for it in the end in a 25-23, 23-25, 15-25, 24-26 loss to Wilson Beddingfield in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tournament semifinals.

Beth Carter finished with eight kills and Camille Williams had seven kills.

Anna Sullivan ended the evening with 14 digs.

The Golden Falcons travel to West Brunswick on Saturday for an opening-round match in the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs.

NJ tops SC

KENLY -- Top-seeded North Johnston held on to defeat Spring Creek 25-23, 25-20, 23-25, 16-25, 15-11 on Tuesday afternoon.

Randi Oxendine handed out 22 assists and served three aces for the Gators. Kristin Smith pounded out 15 kills with 13 aces and a block. Shaquita Brooks finished with 19 kills, six blocks and an ace.

Alex Benton recorded three aces and Brittany Collier had two kills an ace and a block. Stacie Harris added two aces.

Spring Creek (9-10 overall) returns to action Saturday in the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs.

Soccer

WCS falls

WILSON -- Wayne Christian nearly rallied from a 2-0 deficit with less than five minutes to play, but came up just short with a 2-1 loss to Trinity of Raleigh in the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference tournament finals.

Gregory Alexander's goal on an assist from Bradley Yelverton got the Eagles (14-7 overall) on the board in the closing minutes. Moments later, Yelverton nearly delivered the tying goal as his shot hit the crossbar.

Trinity held a 1-0 lead at halftime and Hunter Bostwick stretched the margin to 2-0 on a penalty kick in the 60th minute. Chase King finished with nine saves in goal for Wayne Christian.

Alexander, Travis Thomas and Josh Powers were each named to the All-Tournament team for the Eagles. Thomas received the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award. Yelverton, Powers and Luke Howell were named to the All-Conference team and John Thomas Norris of was named the Conference's Most Valuable Player.

The N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association soccer playoff pairings will be announced today.

Golf

Walnut Creek LGA

Hiromi Sueki emerged the play-of-the-day winner during weekly tournament action at Walnut Creek Country Club.

Novella Zambelli took low gross, while Charlotte Campbell claimed low net. Pete Reaves and Betty Holloway tied for low putts.

In a recent Eastern Ladies League match at Brook Valley CC, Jewel Ivey had second net in championship flight play. Zambelli captured first gross in first flight, while Mary Ann Sutton had second gross.

Nancy Satterfield seized first net in second flight.

Middle schools

* Volleyball: Grantham d. Greenwood 26-24, 25-20, 23-25, 25-17 -- Kyana McLean served four aces. Morgan Powell added two kills and two aces, while Keaton Bradley had two kills. Latrecia Johnson (two kills), Amber Murphy (two kills) and Trissa Sanders (one kill, one ace) also contributed to the win. Grantham entertains Spring Creek on Thursday.

Youth sports

* 8U Football: Boys Club Chiefs 24, Spring Creek 0 -- Despite the shutout, the Gators (1-1 overall) received solid efforts from Joshua Lebron, Austin Kornegay, Jessie Casper, Dakota Newsome, Jensen Barwick and Jalen Staps.
