KENLY -- North Duplin opened defense of its Class 1-A Carolina Conference championship in exciting -- and disappointing -- fashion Friday evening.
The Rebels had a PAT blocked in overtime and dropped a 21-20 decision to North Johnston. It was North Duplin's fifth consecutive loss of the season.
Senior Akeem Cox, who rushed for 238 yards on 40 carries, scored from 4 yards out in overtime. After the blocked extra point, the Panthers answered with D.J. White's 10-yard run. The PAT sealed the victory.
Cox's 26-yard run nearly midway through the fourth quarter forged a 14-14 deadlock. Quarterback Marcus Kornegay completed three passes for 18 yards and also rushed for a first-quarter touchdown.
The Rebels finished with 258 yards of total offense.
North Duplin (2-5 overall, 0-1 Carolina) visits Princeton next Friday. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at the Fred Bartholomew Athletic Complex.
