PIKEVILLE -- Just getting close is getting old for Charles B. Aycock.

The Golden Falcons watched their 21-0, first-half lead disappear as Wilson Beddingfield scored 41 consecutive points in a 41-27 victory at Hardy Talton Stadium on Friday evening.

It was the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opener for both teams.

C.B. Aycock, which had its Homecoming festivities spoiled, suffered its fourth loss of the season when it's either led or trailed by seven points or less heading into the fourth quarter.

"I've said since the beginning of the year that this is a young football team," said Golden Falcons head coach Randy Pinkowski. "I've got three seniors on either side of the ball and the rest of them were playing JV ball last year.

"For them to go with one of the top-10 teams in the state and have them down for a half, and come back late and put another score on them, I think it really bodes well for the future."

Bruins quarterback Lance Price tossed three third-quarter touchdown passes. Jermal Artis caught the first two scoring strikes, which covered 48 and 10 yards. Price's two-point conversion pass to Jumal Rolle evened the game at 21-21.

A junior, Price completed 21 of 35 passes for 350 yards and four touchdowns, and was picked off twice. Artis hauled in six catches for 154 yards and three scores. Rolle caught eight passes for 127 yards.

The Bruins (6-0, 1-0 ECC) amassed 422 yards of offense.

"Beddingfield, they're so athletic and so speedy," said Pinkowski. "We were bringing all kinds of heat on them and once they started to get their protection schemes shored up, we couldn't run with them.

"Their quarterback put the ball on the money and their receivers went up and got it. I can't fault my kids."

Price's 17-yard touchdown pass to Terry Davis gave Beddingfield its first lead with 1:18 left in the third period. Monteith Lucas' 10-yard scoring run stretched the lead to 35-21 and Price's 38-yard strike to Artis increased the cushion to 41-21.

Aycock's Marcus Cobb capped the scoring with a 25-yard touchdown run with less than a minute to play. With quarterback Craig Murdock dressed, but still unable to go with a shoulder injury, Cobb was the Golden Falcons' workhorse with a season-high 223 yards and three TDs on 30 carries.

Cobb had touchdown runs of 68 and 1 yard in the first half. David Gurganus' 1-yard run gave Aycock (2-5, 0-1) its three-touchdown advantage with just under two minutes to play in the first half.

"We found the perimeter run play that we've been looking for," said Pinkowski. "I can't say enough good things about what happened tonight. Marcus Cobb stepped in there at tailback for the first time in three years. He really ran the ball well.

"We're finding our way. I think there's still some victories for the Falcons in there this year."
