MOUNT OLIVE -- Chris McClaugherty netted the game-winning goal in the 92nd minute as Mount Olive slipped past UNC Pembroke in a non-conference, men's soccer match Wednesday evening.
Tied 0-0 after regulation, McClaugherty's chip shot came off fast and high enough to elude Braves' goalie Horatio Bynes. It was McClaugherty's second goal of the season. Tyler Jameson earned the assist.
UNC Pembroke (5-6-1 overall) owned a 14-11 edge in shots and took six more corner kicks than Mount Olive. But the Braves lost two players due to red cards and played nine against 11. Six yellow cards were also issued during the match.
The Trojans' Angelo Acquah misfired twice.
MOC goalie Chris Slaughter, who tallied six saves, stopped a rebound shot by the Braves in the 69th minute. UNCP thought it had scored, but the referee ruled Slaughter has possession before the ball crossed the goal line.
Slaughter intercepted a Braves' pass in the opening minute of the first overtime, which helped set up Jameson's push toward McClaugherty.
"Going into overtime (MOC) coach (Jerry Riggs) asked us who wanted to be the hero, and I raised my hand and knew if I had an opportunity I had to put it in," said McClaugherty. "We needed this win bad. It'll help us in the (Southeast) regional rankings."
Mount Olive (8-4-0) visits in-state and Conference Carolinas foe Lees-McRae on Saturday. Game time is 7 p.m.
