Eastern Wayne turned in 30 minutes of quality soccer on Monday evening.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, their sense of urgency came a tad too late.
No. 15-ranked Wilson Hunt jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead and left Little Big Horn with a 4-0 Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference victory.
Biez Neto's shot into the right corner of the goal slipped past Eastern Wayne keeper Josh Olmsted in the sixth minute to give the visitors an early lead.
In the 25th minute, Aaron White beat a pair of Eastern Wayne defenders down the far sideline and ripped a blast past Olmsted for a 2-0 advantage.
In the opening 40 minutes, Eastern Wayne struggled to win 50-50 balls, feed teammates with through balls in a timely fashion and put the right amount of touch on long passes. A golden scoring opportunity with the ball loose in front of the Hunt net that at least one Eastern Wayne player got a foot on went by the wayside late in the first half.
"We talked about that at the half that we came out a bit sluggish," said Eastern Wayne head coach Jorg Wagner. "On the attack we weren't bringing numbers forward. We weren't possessing the ball with any urgency and not trying to win any 50-50 balls.
"In that regard we did quite a bit better in the second half."
Henry Orellana added to Hunt's cushion in the 55th minute with a long shot that clanged off the cross bar and got by Olmsted.
Eastern Wayne (5-6 overall, 3-3 ECC) began to control possession midway through the second half. The Warriors challenged the Hunt defense but failed to capitalize.
Nick Bowden appeared to be fouled inside the 18-yard box in the 58th minute, but wasn't awarded a penalty kick for his efforts. Alex Henson's shot on goal rolled just wide in the 64th minute.
"Their shots were on target and ours weren't," said Wagner. "I thought we had two or three good chances, especially Alex with the late ball. But, at that point it was already 3-0 and that was a little bit too late.
"It's a little disappointing, I thought we would be able to keep it a little closer and make it more interesting in the second half. But, you can't fault the boys for their efforts."
Sam Hofferkamp capped Hunt's scoring in the 71st minute. The Warriors (12-3-1) exited 6-2 in the ECC.
Eastern Wayne entertains Wilson Beddingfield on Wednesday and Hunt plays host to Charles B. Aycock with a share of the ECC lead on the line. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
