AYDEN -- Rosewood opened its Class 1-A Carolina Conference men's soccer schedule with a 4-1 decision over Ayden-Grifton.
It was the Eagles' first win of the season.
Giovanni Mateos netted two goals and added an assist. Cody Harris and Brett Robinson also scored for the Eagles.
Rosewood (1-7-3, 1-0-0) entertains North Johnston on Wednesday.
Saints escape
DUDLEY -- Nahun Vasquez provided the game-winning goal as Southern Wayne edged Wilson Beddingfield 3-2 in an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference battle Monday.
It was Vasquez's first goal of the season.
Carlos Zometa and Manny Saucedo also scored their first goals of the season for the Saints, who improved to 3-7 overall and 2-4 in the ECC.
Aycock wins big
PIKEVILLE -- No. 2-ranked Charles B. Aycock dominated from the opening whistle and went on to defeat Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Kinston 10-1 on Monday.
Alex Rodriguez and Tyson Pearson each recorded a hat trick (three goals) for the Golden Falcons. Thomas Oliver added two goals, while teammates William Tamuar and Tucker Pearson rounded out the scoring with one goal apiece.
Aycock (15-0-0 overall, 7-0-0 ECC) visits No. 15-ranked Wilson Hunt on Wednesday.
Faith victorious
ROCKY MOUNT -- Faith Christian fell behind early, but rallied for a 3-2 victory at Falls Road on Monday.
Brad Floars tied the game at 1-1 in the 17th minute and was immediately followed by a second Falls Road goal.
John-Kurt Cozine scored twice in the second half to spark the Conqueror comeback.
Nick Gurley collected 12 saves for Faith.
The Conquerors (5-5 overall) will play host to Cornerstone Christian on Friday.
Volleyball
Dawgs prevail
PRINCETON -- Princeton continued its solid play on the Carolina 1-A Conference scene with a convincing 25-13, 25-18, 25-15 victory over Spring Creek on Monday.
Brittany Baker and Devon Murphey led the ballanced Bulldog attack with four kills apiece. Teammate Erin Schultz handed out 14 assists for the Dawgs.
Kristin Smith paced the Gator offense with seven kills. Randi Oxendine led Spring Creek with 11 assists.
The Gators (6-7 overall, 3-5 CC) will travel to North Johnston today, while the Dawgs (10-5, 4-4) entertain Ayden-Grifton.
WCDS rolls
Brooke Norris turned in a solid floor game as Wayne Country Day hammered Word of God 25-8, 25-9, 25-7 on Monday afternoon.
Norris, one of four seniors playing her final regular-season home match, delivered eight kills, four service aces, two digs and three assists. Fellow senior Jessica Lewis added seven kills and four aces.
Senior Bridgette Briggs contributed six kills, four aces and 11 assists. Kayla Flanagan, also a senior, added one kill and three digs.
Kim Martell had four kils and two aces.
Wayne Country Day (17-3 overall) concludes regular-season play Oct. 14 at Greenfield.
Warriors win
DUDLEY -- Eastern Wayne downed county rival Southern Wayne 25-22, 21-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-6 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Monday.
A strong service game by Amythest McPhail helped the Warriors steal the momentum in game four.
Anna Hajjar and Megan Hruby combined for five aces in the deciding game.
Faith rolls
ROCKY MOUNT -- Faith Christian continued its maturation process on the volleyball court as it defeated Falls Road Christian 25-14, 25-20, 25-15 on Monday.
Brooke Anderson led the Conquerors with seven kills.
Rebecca Smith contributed 18 assists, while teammate Jennifer Christopher added 11 helpers.
Faith Christian (7-4 overall) welcomes Cornerstone Christian on Friday.
Cross country
Eagles split meet
PRINCETON -- Josh Magnus dominated the course as Wayne Christian defeated Princeton 18-38 on Monday.
Magnus claimed first place overall with a time of 18 minutes, 36 seconds. Teammates Justin Brathwaite (19:18) and Connor Jones (19:28) crossed the finish line second and third, respectively.
Ethan Anderson was the Bulldogs' top finisher in 20:20.
Wayne Christian's Jennifer Price won the girls' side of the meet in 22 minutes and 32 seconds, but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs prevailed 20-36 when the team scores were tallied.
Princeton's Olivia Booker (22:56) and Megan Hewitt (24:04) finished second and third, respectively.
Tennis
Warriors cruise
WILMINGTON -- Eastern Wayne swept doubles play and prevailed over E.A. Laney 6-3 on Monday.
The teams of Lyndsey Frederick-Molly Musgrave, Danielle Daniel-Kelsie Yates and Janell Daniel-Emily Northington each earned a doubles point for the Warriors.
Daniel, Frederick and Yates each won in singles.
Eastern Wayne (13-1 overall) returns to action Wednesday in the season-ending Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tournament on the Snow Hill Tennis Complex courts.
JV sports
* Volleyball: Eastern Wayne d. Southern Wayne 25-17, 18-25, 25-23 -- Emily Sparks led the Warrior offense with six kills and two aces. Lura Hulse added four kills and one block. Eastern Wayne moved to 6-7 overall.
Middle schools
* Volleyball: Norwayne d. Grantham 25-7, 25-9, 25-19 -- Kallie Suggs led the Cobras with 12 points on serve. Regan Herndon added seven points on serve. Norwayne improved to 7-0 on the season.
* Volleyball: Dillard d. Mount Olive 25-19, 25-19 (match 1) and 19-25, 25-16, 25-12 (match 2) -- Victoria McKenzie delivered 16 points on serve in match one. Ashley Pocheko contributed 17 points on serve in match two. Shakira Campbell added seven kills. Dillard improved to 5-3 overall.
* Volleyball: Spring Creek d. Greenwood 25-23, 13-25, 25-20 (match 1) and 25-10, 18-25, 25-20 (match 2)-- Karen Best led the Gators with 10 points on serve in match one. Hannah Keel added seven points on serve including an ace. In match two, Abby Sutton led the Gators with seven service points. Spring Creek improved to 5-3 overall.
