MOC soccer splits

MOUNT OLIVE -- Anthony Payne tallied two goals and an assist to lead Mount Olive College past archrival Barton College 6-0 in a Conference Carolinas men's soccer contest Wednesday evening.
Payne converted a penalty kick in the 70th minute and added a goal off Sean Keener's assist in the 82nd minute. Payne assisted Justin Oliver on a goal in the 71st minute.
Adrian Daniels handed out goal-scoring assists to Scott Mitchell (10th minute) and Frank Boateng (53rd minute). Kirk Peterson provided a Trojans goal in the 29th minute.
Mitchell has a team-leading six goals and 17 points, followed by Payne with four goals and 13 points.
Mount Olive (7-3-0 overall) claimed just its second Conference Carolinas win in five tries this season. The Trojans have won five of the last six meetings against the Bulldogs, including four by shutout.
Goal keeper Chris Slaughter notched one save and earned his third shutout of the season for MOC. Barton goalie Josh Cooper recorded five saves.
The Trojans return action Saturday at Wingate, which is tied for 10th in the latest NSCAA/adidas Division II Southeast Region poll. Game time is 7 p.m.
Women's soccer
MOUNT OLIVE -- Jackie Jimenez collected a goal and an assist, but Mount Olive College dropped a 5-2 decision to archrival Barton in their Conference Carolinas battle at Amon Field.
Jimenez assisted Alyecia Higgins on a goal in the 33rd minute and scored off a double-assist from Marie Richters and Lauren Condon in the 75th minute. It was Jimenez's third goal of the season and just the 11th overall for the Trojans in 10 matches.
Hillary Peterson delivered two goals and two assists for Barton, which remained unbeaten in five conference outings this season. Allie Wilkerson scored one goal and passed out one assist.
The Bulldogs improved to 6-3 overall.
Mount Olive (2-9 overall, 1-4 CC) entertains Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday. Kickoff is 3:30 p.m.
