PIKEVILLE -- Eastern Wayne won both portions of a Class 3-A Eastern Carolina cross country meet with Charles B. Aycock and Wilson Beddingfield on Tuesday.

The Warriors won the boys' portion 23-45 over the Golden Falcons. The Bruins were a distant third with 61.

Eastern Wayne's Russell Turner finished second with a time of 18 minutes, 32 seconds and Zach Parrish was third in 19:15. Teammates Lamont Woodard, Caleb Cooper and Andrew Cummins finished fourth, sixth and eighth, respectively.

"All of the men ran well together as a pack," said Warriors coach Sidney Myers. "They continue to push and challenge each other every day at practice and have developed a strong competitive atmosphere internal to the team at every meet."

Eric DuBose finished fifth for the Golden Falcons with a time of 19:45, Bobby Cox earned a seventh-place finish and Elliot Gonzalez was 10th.

Aycock's Caroline Schlaeppi emerged the top runner in the girls' race with a time of 23 minutes. Eastern Wayne's Kelly Gregorcyk finished one second behind Schlaeppi and helped the Warriors claim the team win 25-30.

Beddingfield did not have enough runners for a team score.

The Warriors' Leanna Kirkland was third with a time of 23:08. Sara Ricker finished fifth. Heather Black and Sarah Schley were seventh and eighth, respectively.

"I am so proud of our girls," said Eastern Wayne coach Jan Metzler. "They put forth tremendous effort at practice daily and it shows when they compete. This team continues to show dedication."

The Golden Falcons got top-10 finishes from Lorena Estrada (4th), Megan Hales (7th), Kendra Speight (9th) and Anita Arellano (10th).

Volleyball

Aycock triumphs

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock shook off a game one loss and rallied to defeat Kinston 24-26, 25-23, 25-13, 25-16 in their Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference match Tuesday.

Camille Williams hammered out 14 kills and Brittany Jackson added 12 kills. Jessica Hare contributed seven aces and Anna Sullivan had six aces.

The Golden Falcons (6-7 overall, 4-3 ECC) visit Wilson Hunt on Thursday.

Hawks cruise

TARBORO -- Jordan Hudson handed out 33 assists and Marissa Lanier pounded out 13 kills as North Lenoir defeated Tarboro 25-19, 25-10, 25-15 in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play on Tuesday.

Kristen Davenport chipped in six kills. Asheena Moore had three kills.

The Hawks (18-0 overall, 7-0 EPC) entertain North Pitt on Thursday.

SC rallies for win

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek overcame a 2-0 deficit and rallied past Ayden-Grifton 7-25, 21-25, 25-23, 27-25, 15-3 in Carolina 1-A Conference play Tuesday.

Randi Oxendine recorded 20 assists and two service aces. Shaquita Brooks had 13 kills, eight blocks and two aces.

Kristin Smith chipped in 15 kills, three blocks and three aces. Alex Benton provided six aces and two kills.

The Gators (6-5 overall, 3-3 Carolina 1-A) visit Rosewood on Thursday.

Eagles can't hang on

Rosewood seized an early lead against Carolina 1-A Conference rival North Johnston, but couldn't hang on in a 25-20, 23-35, 21-25, 25-18 loss.

Taylor Johnson led the Eagles with eight kills, five blocks, two service aces and two digs. Paige Babb passed out 14 assists and Jennifer Hall contributed nine digs, two aces and a kill.

Brittney Cabala tallied seven digs and two kills and Caroline Tart finished with three aces, three kills and two digs. Karen Babb recorded five kills and two blocks and Megan Church had three digs.

Rosewood (4-9 overall, 2-4 Carolina 1-A) entertains Spring Creek on Thursday.

Cougars shutout

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central eased past Eastern Plains 2-A Conference foe Goldsboro 25-11, 25-17, 25-10 on Tuesday.

Natalia Dung had three kills for the Cougars.

Goldsboro (0-15 overall) entertains Tarboro today.

Soccer

Chargers blitzed

ROCKY MOUNT -- Goal keeper James Crooks recorded 12 saves, but Wayne Country Day just couldn't manufacture any offensive support in an 11-0 loss to Faith Christian-Rocky Mount on Tuesday afternoon.

The Patriots, who took 22 shots on goal, scored three goals within the first 10 minutes. Chris Cash finished with a hat trick (three goals) and six teammates contributed at least one goal in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference affair.

"Faith has, in my opinion, the single-best assembly of talent I've ever seen for a 1-A school," said Chargers head coach Baron Heinemann. "I had a few players who played all out until the end, but ultimately these boys' spirits are about gone.

"We have two very tough matches left and we will do our best to stay in the fight."

Wayne Country Day (6-13-1 overall, 2-6 CPIC) is the guest of Ahoskie Ridgecroft on Friday.

Gators bite Tigers

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek edged James Kenan 5-4 a Carolina/Super Six 1-A Conference match Tuesday afternoon.

Jamie Johnson, Ivey Best, Rachel Lewis and Jana Kutsch each earned a singles win for the Gators.

The doubles team of Johnson-Kutsch was also victorious.

Spring Creek (8-1 overall) visits North Johnston today.

JV sports

* Volleyball: North Duplin d. Princeton 25-22, 26-24 -- Tearra Ammons led the Rebels with seven kills, three digs, one block and a service. Amanda White pitched in five digs.

* Volleyball: Faith Christian d. Berean 25-12, 25-17 -- Christina Powell had three kills for the Conquerors and Abigail Pierce provided two kills and four aces. Faith (7-1 overall) visits Falls Road Christian on Monday.

* Volleyball: Tarboro d. North Lenoir 22-25, 25-21, 26-24 -- The Hawks dropped to 10-7 overall and 5-1 in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play and will play host to North Pitt on Thursday.

* Volleyball: Ayden-Grifton d. Spring Creek 26-28, 27-25, 25-21 -- Kelsey Rogers had seven kills and two aces for the Gators. Luzbeth Avila chipped in five assists and Lolita Correna added four aces.

* Soccer: Norwayne 4, Eastern Wayne 2 -- Juan Pina scored all four goals as the Cobras handed Eastern Wayne its first loss of the season. Adrian Gutierrez finished with three assists for Norwayne. Jacob Carmichael and Eduardo Rubio each scored for Eastern Wayne.
