Cambell sinks putt, Trojans capture title

ROCKY MOUNT -- Ryan Campbell's birdie putt sealed a dramatic ending to the ninth annual Gardner's BBQ Dogfight contested at Ford's Colony Country Club on Tuesday afternoon.

Campbell helped lead Mount Olive College to the team title after the Trojans fired a team school-record 14-under 274 in second-round play. MOC finished tied with Conference Carolinas rival Barton with a 36-hole score of 555, and forced a playoff.

In the playoff, five players from each team teed off on No. 1 and then played the par-4, 432-yard hole as a 10-some. The four best scores of five from each team were added up on the hole and Mount Olive finished 1-under after Campbell sank his 25-foot birdie putt.

Campbell, who starred at Charles B. Aycock High School, ended up fourth among individuals with a two-day score of 137. Teammate Scott Woodard tied for eighth at 138, while Jonathan Greene and Pete Skirpstas shared 12th place with scores of 141.

Mount Olive returns to action Oct. 13 in the Queens Invitational at Hilton Head, S.C.

Volleyball

HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- Corie Skislak returned to the lineup and Mount Olive swept Coker (S.C.) College 25-11, 25-12, 25-19 in Conference Carolinas action Tuesday evening.

Skislak, who missed three matches with a foot injury, supplied 10 kills and six blocks for the Trojans. Racey Bartley added 10 kills as Mount Olive won at Coker for the first time since 2005.

Joanie Werling dished out 33 assists and served two aces. Kari Ham and Alicia Mote also served two aces apiece.

Mount Olive (7-11 overall, 3-2 CC) entertains Anderson (S.C.) University on Friday. First serve is 6:30 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
