C.B. Aycock posts shutout

DUDLEY -- Before the Charles B. Aycock boys' soccer team stepped off the bus Monday evening, head coach Kevin Adkins issued a challenge -- play Southern Wayne in the same manner as a rival or state-ranked opponent.

The No. 2-ranked Golden Falcons did. They scored five goals in the first 15 minutes and cruised to a 12-0, Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference victory.

"I told the kids before we got off the bus 'hey, let's play to a high level and then we'll see what happens,'" said Adkins. "The intensity in the game has got to be the same every day. You can't just let up, you have got to come and play."

David Burke scored the first of his four goals in the fourth minute on an assist from Alex Rodriguez. Three minutes later, Thomas Oliver slipped in a rebound off a corner kick.

Oliver added goals in the 10th and 13 minutes. Burke scored off a deflection in the 15th minute and Tucker Pearson beat Saints keeper Luis Castaneda on a rebound off Rodriguez's blast in the 24th minute.

Burke added a pair of goals before intermission and Gavin Forrest found the back of the net off a corner kick. Aycock (13-0, 5-0 ECC) led 9-0 at halftime.

"Our plan was to get early goals if we could and then give all our other players an opportunity to play tonight," said Adkins. "We played some JV guys tonight an extra 10 minutes or so to give them a taste of what high school soccer is really about."

Tyler Lynch, William Tamuar and Ryan Martin each scored in the second half as the Golden Falcons increased their goals total for the season to 76. Aycock finished with a 20-10 shots-on-goal advantage.

Facing a state-ranked and unbeaten conference opponent should serve as a learning opportunity for a young Southern Wayne squad. The Saints fell to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in the ECC.

"It's hard to respond to a team that's the No. 2 team in the state and their skills are so overwhelming at times when you're a program that's trying to get off the ground," said Saints coach Scott Underhill. "All we can do is continuously day in and day out work harder on our skills and our development as ballplayers out here.

"I told them it was going to be a dose of reality tonight, but I told them you want to emulate those good players."

The Golden Falcons visit Wilson Beddingfield on Wednesday while Southern Wayne hosts Eastern Wayne. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
