Wilson Fike shuts out Eastern Wayne

Eastern Wayne anticipated a tough test against Wilson Fike on Friday evening.

The Warriors didn't expect a 44-0 loss.

"They absolutely imposed their will on us tonight," said Warriors head coach Jeff Price. "This was like the Goldsboro game all over again."

An early Eastern Wayne turnover led to the game's first score and set the tone for the Warrior offense. Sophomore Lamar Best fumbled on the third EWHS play from scrimmage. Two snaps later Fike was in the end zone.

The Golden Demon offensive line created holes throughout the game as nine different backs carried the football for 462 total yards. The visitors also controlled the time of possession -- 30 minutes, 55 seconds to the Warriors' 17:05.

"They run the double-wing about as good as anyone we are going to see," said Price. "They won the battles at the line and they controlled the clock because of it. We couldn't get our defense off the field, and it showed as the game wore on.

"We never got a drive sustained long enough to give our defense a break on the sideline."

With the Demons holding a 19-0 lead in the second quarter, the Warriors tried to kick-start their offense through the passing game.

The plan backfired as Dan Price's pass was deflected en route to Steven Hall and landed softly in the hands of Devin Jackson. The speedster raced down the Fike sideline, cut back at the 15-yard line and found the end zone to complete the 65-yard touchdown return.

The Demons never looked back.

"With this age group of athletes, it's really hard to get behind three or four scores," said Price. "Chances of making a comeback when you get that far behind are very slim."

Lamar Best stepped into the role of workhorse with his brother Hassan sidelined with an ankle injury. Lamar rushed 21 times for 45 yards. Dan Price, a senior signal caller, completed 5 of 12 passes for 24 yards.

After the game, Jeff Price acknowledged that the best remedy for a lopsided loss is a short memory. The Warriors (2-2 overall) must prepare for a showdown with West Craven next week.

"Our kids work really hard and you hate to lose like this," said Price. "We just need to move forward and get ready for our next game."

Eastern Wayne will need to prepare for the spread offense in practice this week.

"Last year we did a good job against the spread, we really got after their quarterback," said Price. "They beat us 17-14, but it was a great game and I hope that next week is the same."
